3D‐Printed Low‐Cost Artificial Corneal Perfusion Chamber for Investigating Corneal Physiology and Diseases in Different Animal Species

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 25, Issue 22, November 2023., 2023
A series of open‐access 3D‐printed corneal perfusion chambers whose diameters can be finely adjusted to use in ex vivo experiments is presented, including tissue culture, of corneal tissues of different animal species including humans, porcine, cattle, rodents, and birds.

Structural basis of the amidase ClbL central to the biosynthesis of the genotoxin colibactin

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, Volume 79, Issue 9, Page 830-836, September 2023., 2023
Insight into biosynthetic pathways in the human microbiome can provide details of host–microbe interactions and beneficial symbiosis. In this report, the structure and function of a key bond‐forming enzyme in the biosynthesis of the human genotoxin colibactin is presented.Colibactin is a genotoxic natural product produced by select commensal bacteria ...

The boundary problem: Defining and delineating the community in field trials with gene drive organisms

open access: yesBioethics, Volume 37, Issue 6, Page 600-609, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Despite widespread and worldwide efforts to eradicate vector‐borne diseases such as malaria, these diseases continue to have an enormous negative impact on public health. For this reason, scientists are working on novel control strategies, such as gene drive technologies (GDTs).

Investigation on Fluid Flow Heat Transfer and Frictional Properties of Al2O3 Nanofluids Used in Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Nanofluids are generally utilized in providing cooling, lubrication phenomenon, and controlling the thermophysical properties of the working fluid. In this paper, nanoparticles of Al2O3 are added to the base fluid, which flows through the counterflow arrangement in a turbulent flow condition.

Lost in the wind: An integrated approach for the recognition of mixed clastic–carbonate continental aeolianites

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 69, Issue 5, Page 2203-2227, August 2022., 2022
Abstract Aeolianites with a mixed clastic and carbonate detrital mineralogy are typical deposits of tropical coastal desert environments. These deposits are genetically related to transgressive–regressive cycles, with the shallow‐marine carbonate detrital component being deflated from the exposed seafloor during episodes of glacial sea‐level lowstands,

Isolation, not locality

open access: yesPhilosophy and Phenomenological Research, Volume 103, Issue 3, Page 607-619, November 2021., 2021
Abstract There is a long tradition of preferring local theories to ones that posit lawful or causal influence at a spacetime distance. In this paper, we argue against this preference. We argue that nonlocality is scientifically unobjectionable and that nonlocal theories can be known.

A guide for optimal iodine staining and high‐throughput diceCT scanning in snakes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 17, Page 11587-11603, September 2021., 2021
We present the first high‐throughput workflow for full‐body skeletal and soft‐tissue (dice) CT scans in preserved snakes. These methods increase publicly available diceCT scans for reptiles by an order of magnitude and can be generalized to any elongate vertebrates.

Pre‐instrumental summer precipitation variability in northwestern Greece from a high‐elevation Pinus heldreichii network

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 41, Issue 4, Page 2828-2839, 30 March 2021., 2021
Associated with a strengthening of circum‐global sub‐tropical high‐pressure belts, climate models unequivocally predict a decrease of Mediterranean precipitation, accompanied by an increase of extreme events in the upcoming decades. Long‐term desiccation will amplify evaporative demand challenging plant metabolism and foster an even greater need to ...
