Preimaginal development of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in brackish water gives rise to adult mosquitoes with thicker cuticles and greater insecticide resistance

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The principal arboviral vector Aedes aegypti can develop in coastal brackish water field habitats (0.5–15 g/L salt) with larvae possessing thicker cuticles and greater resistance to the larvicide Temephos. Females emerging from brackish water‐developing preimaginal stages are now shown to have thicker and remodelled leg and abdominal cuticles and ...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of malaria vector niche overlaps in Africa

open access: yesEcological Informatics
Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with transmission heightened by the dynamics of primary and secondary mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium parasites.

Indoor residual spraying of distinct insecticide formulations in a household‐scale micro‐mosaic format: Feasibility and effectiveness for malaria vector control in rural Zambia

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Densities of all Anopheles species were approximately comparable across all IRS regimes. No differences observed between treatment regimes regarding species composition of the Anopheles funestus group or An. gambiae complex. This operational pilot demonstrates the practical feasibility of IRS micro‐mosaics, despite the inherent increase in deployment ...

The Effect of Brazil's Family Health Program on Cognitive Skills

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the effect of Brazil's Family Health Program (Programa Saude da Familia, FHP) on cognitive skills (measured by test scores) of fifth‐grade students. We use biennial data from national exams between 2007 and 2015, and variation in the FHP implementation date across municipalities, birth cohort, and test year to identify the ...

[Malaria Vector Surveillance in 2024].

open access: yesJugan geon-gang gwa jilbyeong
Effective malaria control requires early diagnosis, treatment, and vector mosquito management. In 2024, 94.1% of domestic malaria cases were reported in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon Provinces in the Republic of Korea. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency annually surveys the mosquito density to provide vector information in malaria ...

Photodegradation of commercial insect repellents containing DEET and IR‐3535 under ultraviolet light associated or not with chemical ultraviolet filters evaluated by Raman spectroscopy

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the photodegradation of commercial insect repellents containing DEET and IR‐3535 under UV‐A and UV‐B irradiation using Raman spectroscopy. Pure DEET and IR‐3535 showed intrinsic photostability, whereas DEET diluted in ethanol and a commercial DEET‐based formulation exhibited significant spectral changes after UV exposure.

Pipe Water, Employment and Health: A Gendered Analysis in India

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the impact of indoor piped drinking water (IPDW) on gender disparities in employment and health in India, using panel data from the India Human Development Survey (2005–2012). Employing a differences‐in‐differences (DID) model with heterogeneous treatment effects, the analysis reveals that IPDW access increases rural women ...

Shocks and Poverty in Uganda: Understanding the Coping Mechanisms of the Poor

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Coping mechanisms adopted by households, when responding to shocks, have a direct impact on their short‐ and long‐term levels of destitution. Yet our understanding of these coping strategies relative to the type of shock and the impact on the poorest is dominated by literature that relies on limited observations, over rather short time periods—

Addressing Behavioural Determinants of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Through Community Dialogue in Kalu District, Ethiopia: A Mixed‐Methods Study

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health challenge in Ethiopia, with 20–30,000 new cases annually. Limited awareness and misconceptions contribute to delayed care seeking, stigma, prolonged healing, and reduced uptake of preventive measures in CL‐endemic communities.
