Effect of nitrofurantoin on meiosis of the male mouse

Human Genetics, 1977
The effects of nitrofurantoin [N-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidine)-1-amino-hydantoin] on chromosomes of primary and secondary spermatocytes of mice were studied. No mutagenic activity was detectable after application of either 8 mg/kg or 40 mg/kg nitrofurantoin.

Meiosis-Inducing and Meiosis-Preventing Substances in Human Male Reproductive Organs

Fertility and Sterility, 1981
The initiation of meiosis is controlled by two substances, a meiosis-inducing substance (MIS) and a meiosis-preventing substance (MPS). These have been shown to be present in reproductive organs of both sexes of different mammals. In this investigation MIS and MPS were also shown to be present in man.

Meiosis in the Male Periplaneta americana

Nature, 1963
CYTOLOGY of the common cockroach Periplaneta americana (Blattidae) dates back to 19091, and yet recent re-examination has not only brought to light interesting details, but also much controversy2–8. It was therefore felt necessary to examine the locally available species of cockroaches with the view of understanding the intricacies of the problem ...

Male and female meiosis in grasshoppers

Chromosoma, 1974
Male meiosis in the grasshopper Stethophyma grossum is well known as an example of proximal chiasma localisation. An investigation of female meiosis in oocytes of this species shows that both the frequency and distribution of chiasmata are quite different from the male situation. Mean chiasma frequency per cell (14.98) in considerably higher in females

Cyclin A1 is required for meiosis in the male mouse

Nature Genetics, 1998
The mammalian A-type cyclin family consists of two members, cyclin A1 (encoded by Ccna1) and cyclin A2 (encoded by Ccna2). Cyclin A2 promotes both G1/S and G2/M transitions, and targeted deletion of Ccna2 in mouse is embryonic lethal3. Cyclin A1 is expressed in mice exclusively in the germ cell lineage and is expressed in humans at highest levels in ...

Spontaneous univalence at male meiosis in the mouse

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 1973
A single male mouse exhibiting almost total achiasmate meiosis with a concomitant increase in univalent frequency is reported. It was impossible to state whether this condition was caused by asynapsis or desynapsis. Histological examination of the testis showed an apparent block in spermatogenesis associated with a thickening of the tunica albugenica ...

Meiosis in the male of Puto albicans (Coccoidea-Homoptera)

Chromosoma, 1968
Cytologically, Puto has proved more primitive than its taxonomic position would indicate. In the single previously described example (Hughes-Schrader, 1944), an uncomplicated inverted meiotic sequence was described for the males. The present example, P. albicans, showed a significantly more primitive inverted sequence.

The XY bivalent in human male meiosis

Annals of Human Genetics, 1966
SummaryThe X Y bivalent could eady be recognized in diakinesis and first metaphase in air‐dried preparations. The X and Y were clearly separated in varying proportions of these cells but probably more often in cells in the later stages. No chiasma could be demonstrated with certainty between X and Y.

The Immunocytogenetics of Human Male Meiosis

2007
Recently, several components of the mammalian meiotic recombination pathway have been identified and new immunofluorescence approaches to the analysis of human meiosis have been developed. This has made it possible to directly examine the dynamics of chromosome behavior in meiosis I spermatocytes and address previously intractable questions, such as ...
