"Mama, Do You Love Me?": A Defense of Unloving Parents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this chapter I critique the contemporary Western ideal of unconditional maternal love. In the first section, I draw some preliminary distinctions and clarify the scope and limitations of my inquiry. In the second section, I argue that unloving mothers

Erasable FAP Targeted Spray‐On Probe for Fluorescence‐Guided Surgery

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present the first erasable spray‐on probe for fluorescence‐guided surgery. Following topical delivery, FAP‐FLASH550 targets fibroblast activation protein–expressing stromal cells, delineating tumor margins with high tumor‐to‐background ratios. A 365 nm UV light pulse rapidly erases fluorescent signals through triazene photodegradation and subsequent

Cancer Health Disparities Among Patients With Early-Stage Estrogen Receptor–Positive Breast Cancer: Impact of Public Versus Private Health Care on Diagnosis-to-Treatment Interval in Brazil

open access: yesJCO Global Oncology
PURPOSEIn 2013, Brazil implemented a federal law (Law 12.732/2012) mandating cancer treatment to begin within 60 days of diagnosis. Among women with newly diagnosed estrogen receptor–positive (ER+) nonmetastatic breast cancer, we describe the diagnosis ...

All‐in‐One Underwater Quality Evaluation Metamaterial With Mechanical Robustness, Sound Attenuation, and Diffuse Reflection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this work, a bioinspired all‐in‐one underwater quality evaluation metamaterial, combining sound attenuation, diffuse reflection, and mechanical robustness, is proposed based on jumping spider locomotion and human skeletal biomechanics. Meanwhile, a CNN‑driven quality evaluation framework is established for theoretically dimension‐reduced ...

Modelling, reduction and analysis of Markov automata (extended version) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Markov automata (MA) constitute an expressive continuous-time compositional modelling formalism. They appear as semantic backbones for engineering frameworks including dynamic fault trees, Generalised Stochastic Petri Nets, and AADL.

A Hydrogen‐Releasing Nanozyme Engineers a Mitochondrial ROS Amplifier for Self‐Sustaining Catalytic Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We developed a RhPd‐H nanozyme that integrates enhanced POD‐mimetic catalytic activity with thermally triggered H2 release. H2 shields and reprograms mitochondria to continuously leak endogenous ·O2−. This dual‐path ROS spatially and temporally disrupts redox homeostasis, inducing persistent oxidative stress for tumor suppression and antitumor immunity,

Mathematical Model of Alcoholism Incorporating Treatment: A Case Study in Kenya

open access: yesJournal of Mathematics Instruction, Social Research and Opinion
Alcoholism is characterized by persistent and uncontrollable consumption of alcoholic beverages, which poses significant risks to physical, psychological, and emotional health, including conditions such as liver cirrhosis, epilepsy, cancer, hypertension,

Cells Dynamically Adapt Their Nuclear Volumes and Proliferation Rates During Single to Multicellular Transitions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
It is currently not well understood how cells regulate basic properties, e.g., volume and mechanics within dense multicellular environments like tumors. Here, we show that different cell types of cancer and also normal cells largely decrease their nuclear and cellular volumes in emerging cell clusters and that this is partly driven by cell cycle shifts.
