Contraceptive steroids and the mammary gland: Is there a hazard?

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, 1992
The safety of synthetic steroid hormones to be used for contraception in the human female is tested in rats, beagle dogs, and (once marketing starts) in monkeys. Because early studies did not show a mammary tumor stimulating effect in the human, in contrast to findings in the dog, many objections have been raised to the use of the dog for these ...

Alteration of gene expression in muscle tissue and mammary gland from recombinant somatotropin treated animals: searching for biomarkers

Veterinary Research Communications, 2009
rbST is a peptide hormone banned within the European Union (Council Decision 1999/897/CE). Direct approaches aimed at identifying rbST-treated dairy cattle often produce controversial results. The reason can be found in the difficulty in distinguishing the synthetic molecule from the natural one due to their extreme similarity.

Gene expression in the mammary glands of transgenic animals.

Biochemical Society symposium, 1998
The gene encoding the milk protein beta-lactoglobulin in sheep is expressed in the mammary gland in a tissue-specific manner during pregnancy and lactation. The unmodified sheep gene behaves appropriately in transgenic mice, and we have shown that many of the cis-acting elements that mediate this pattern of expression are located in the proximal 400 bp

EGF receptors on plasma membranes purified from bovine mammary gland of lactating and pregnant animals.

Biochemistry international, 1988
A procedure for purification of plasma membranes from bovine mammary gland has been developed. The binding capacity of EGF to the plasma membranes from mammary tissue of pregnant cows was equal to 335 fmol per mg of protein thus being twofold higher than in membranes from lactating gland. The KD values were not changed.

Nutrition in mammary gland health and lactation: advances over eight Biology of Lactation in Farm Animals meetings.

Journal of animal science, 2008
Over the years, numerous studies have investigated the mechanisms controlling nutrient availability and metabolism in the mammary gland and how dietary interventions can influence these processes. The development of in vivo and in vitro systems made it possible to explore the trafficking and metabolic fate of nutrients and how these are influenced by ...
