Methods of space radiation dose analysis with applications to manned space systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
The full potential of state-of-the-art space radiation dose analysis for manned missions has not been exploited. Point doses have been overemphasized, and the critical dose to the bone marrow has been only crudely approximated, despite the existence of ...

Blue Stragglers in Globular Clusters: Observations, Statistics and Physics

open access: yes, 2014
This chapter explores how we might use the observed {\em statistics} of blue stragglers in globular clusters to shed light on their formation.

X-ray emission from thin plasmas. Collisional ionization for atoms and ions of H to Zn [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Every observation of astrophysical objects involving a spectrum requires atomic data for the interpretation of line fluxes, line ratios and ionization state of the emitting plasma. One of the processes which determines it is collisional ionization.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Transcriptional profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles from prebiopsy prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RNA profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood samples of men undergoing prostate biopsy identifies transcripts associated with clinically significant prostate cancer. Integrative analysis with public tumor datasets links EV‐derived gene signatures to tumor stage and progression‐free survival, highlighting CASP3, XRCC2, and RIT1 ...

Kay Boyle and Mary Reynolds: Friendship Intensified by War

open access: yesE-REA, 2013
In this article, I explore the friendship that existed between Kay Boyle and Mary Reynolds, primarily during World War II. For both of them, their engagement in the war, Boyle as an anti-Fascist fiction writer, and Reynolds as a participant in the French

To ID or Not to ID

open access: yes, 2015
“And now can I have the last four digits of your Social? Then we’ll both know each other.” A cloud of anger swept over me. I glanced up from my computer, blinked, and then elected to continue with my work.
