Pneumocephalus by Valsalva’s maneuver

Pneumocephalus (the accumulation of intracranial air) usually is associated with trauma, neoplasm, infection, or surgery. Spontaneous pneumocephalus is rare.1-7⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓ We describe a patient with a large, asymptomatic pneumocephalus caused by the frequent performance of Valsalva’s maneuver.

This chapter reviews the effects of the Masako (aka, tongue-hold) and Mendelsohn swallow maneuvers on swallow ­physiology for patients with dysphagia. The indications for use of these maneuvers are reviewed, as is treatment efficacy. Future research needs are also discussed.
