Interactions of cadmium with yeast mannans.
The interactions of cadmium (Cd) ions with mannans from six species of yeast were studied using equilibrium dialysis. Among the six mannans examined, the binding capacity of the mannan of S. carlsbergensis was the greatest, at about 146 μmol/g mannan. For the other mannans, the amounts of bound metal ions ranged from 20-46 μmol/g annan.

‘Let's Turn the Grass Into Meat’: Animal Husbandry as Women's Work in Cold War North Korea
ABSTRACT In postcolonial North Korea, the future of the nation was said to be a function of the feedlot. Unobtainable on the battlefields of the recently ended Korean War, liberation and unification of the peninsula became a question of competitive developmentalism.

Burden of Invasive Fungal Diseases in Patients With Alcohol‐Related Hepatitis and Organ Failure
Between 2012 and 2021 in France, invasive fungal diseases affected 1 in 50 patients with alcohol‐related hepatitis and at least two hepatic or extrahepatic complications, with substantially higher mortality than bacterial pneumonia. These findings support targeted screening and early antifungal strategies in this population, as currently recommended ...

Challenge Specific Modulation of Responses to Adjuvant‐Induced Innate Immune Memory
We utilised a commercially available adjuvant formulation to study the induction, maintenance, and consequences of innate immune memory. Using functional assays on bone marrow‐derived innate cells, extensive transcriptomic analysis of haematopoietic progenitors, and challenge models of spirochetal infection, nonspecific inflammation, and model antigen ...

The CSLA and CSLC Families: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives
The CELLULOSE SYNTHASE (CESA) superfamily of proteins contains several sub-families of closely related CELLULOSE SYNTHASE-LIKE (CSL) sequences, Among these, the CSLA and CSLC families are closely related to each other and are the most evolutionarily ...

Tackling the Legs of Mannan-Binding Lectin [PDF]
The recognition of pathogen surfaces by mannan-binding lectin activates MASP proteases, leading to complement activation. A crystal structure by Gingras et al. (2011) in this issue of Structure now shows how the collagen-like stems of mannan-binding lectin bind MASP-1 through a minimalist set of interactions.
