Mansonella perstans filariasis: failure of albendazole treatment.
Infections with Mansonella perstans are common in certain parts of Africa and South America. There is no standard treatment at present. We evaluated the effect of albendazole on microfilaremia in ten consecutive patients. No decrease in microfilarial counts could be demonstrated after a median follow-up period of 45 days.

Molecular Evidence ofWolbachiaEndosymbiosis inMansonella perstansin Gabon, Central Africa [PDF]
The discovery of obligatory intracellular bacteria of the genus Wolbachia in filariae infecting humans led to the use of antibiotics as a potent treatment option. Mansonella perstans is the cause of the second most prevalent filariasis in Gabon, but so far reports on the presence of Wolbachia in this nematode have been inconsistent.

Adrenocortical, autonomic, and inflammatory causes of the metabolic syndrome: nested case-control study. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The causes of metabolic syndrome (MS), which may be a precursor of coronary disease, are uncertain. We hypothesize that disturbances in neuroendocrine and cardiac autonomic activity (CAA) contribute to development of MS.

Patent infections with soil-transmitted helminths and Schistosoma mansoni are not associated with increased prevalence of antibodies to the Onchocerca volvulus peptide epitopes OvMP-1 and OvMP-23 [PDF]
Background: Ov16 serology is considered a reference method for Onchocerca volvulus epidemiological mapping. Given the suboptimal sensitivity of this test and the fact that seroconversion takes more than a year after infection, additional serological ...

Filarial disease in the Brazilian Amazon and emerging opportunities for treatment and control
Following the successful eradication of Wuchereria bancrofti, there are now just three species of conventional microfilaremic human filarial parasites endemic to the Brazilian Amazon region: Mansonella ozzardi, Mansonella perstans and Onchocerca volvulus.

Dynamics of antigenemia and transmission intensity of Wuchereria bancrofti following cessation of mass drug administration in a formerly highly endemic region of Mali [PDF]
Background After seven annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) in six Malian villages highly endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti (overall prevalence rate of 42.7%), treatment was discontinued in 2008.

The Lake Victoria Island Intervention Study on Worms and Allergy-related diseases (LaVIISWA): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The Hygiene Hypothesis proposes that infection exposure protects against inflammatory conditions. Helminths possess allergen-like molecules and may specifically modulate allergy-related immunological pathways to inhibit responses which ...
