The presence of anisotropy in the lowermost mantle—and its absence in the rest of the lower mantle—is often attributed to the alignment of MgSiO\(_3\) post-perovskite (ppv) by the movement of dislocations along glide planes, in response to mantle flow.

Abstract The possibility of a linear-creep (Newtonian-viscosity) upper mantle is reexamined on the basis of present knowledge on flow mechanisms in olivine, including differences between activation parameters for creep and for diffusion, and revised estimates of grain boundary width.
