Introduction to special section: Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Intraplate or "hot spot" volcanic island chains, exemplified by Hawaii, play an important role in plate tectonic theory as reference points for absolute plate motions, but the origin of these volcanoes is not explained by the plate tectonic paradigm ...

Exploring the Impact of Polystyrene Microplastic Beads on Male Gonads of the Marine Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plastic, with its remarkable versatility and numerous applications, has greatly benefited humanity. However, its extreme resistance to natural degradation means it persists in the environment for long periods, causing global environmental problems.

Reconciling the shadow of a subduction signature with rift geochemistry and tectonic environment in Eastern Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Basalt-trachyte volcanoes in the Marie Byrd Land (MBL) Cenozoic province lie along the Amundsen Sea coast on the north flank of the West Antarctic rift.

Characterization of a Portable Computed Tomography System for In Situ Analysis of Wooden Sculptures in Cultural Heritage

open access: yesX-Ray Spectrometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Portable X‐ray computed tomography (portable CT) has become an important tool for the non‐destructive investigation of cultural heritage objects, particularly when in situ analysis is required. This work presents the experimental characterization and application of a transportable cone‐beam CT system designed for the inspection of large and ...

Tertiary-Quaternary intra-plate magmatism in Europe and its relationship to mantle dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Anorogenic intra-plate magmatism was widespread in Europe from early Tertiary to Recent times, extending west to east from Spain to Bulgaria, and south to north from Sicily to northern Germany. Magmatism is spatially and temporally associated with Alpine-

Peixe Zircon as a Quality Control Reference Material in U‐Pb Geochronology by LA‐ICP‐MS

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, EarlyView.
Key Points Peixe#0 zircon was characterised for U‐Pb geochronology using CA‐ID‐TIMS, SIMS and a long‐term LA‐ICP‐MS data set. The consistent results establish Peixe#0 as a reference material for U‐Pb quality control. Trace element heterogeneity requires careful, CL‐guided spot selection.

The late Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the South China Sea: A petrologic perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents a review of available petrological, geochonological and geochemical data for late Mesozoic to Recent igneous rocks in the South China Sea (SCS) and adjacent regions and a discussion of their petrogeneses and tectonic implications. The

A Common Reference Material for Mass‐Dependent Sn Isotope Compositions: An Inter‐Laboratory Calibration Approach

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, EarlyView.
Key Points We recommend using the notation δ122/118SnNIST SRM 3161a for mass‐dependent Sn isotope data. We derived conversion factors relative to NIST SRM 3161a for Puri Sn CEZA (0.132 ± 0.011‰), Sn Lyon (0.229 ± 0.016‰), Sn IPGP (0.162 ± 0.018‰). Tin isotope compositions are presented for SPEX CertiPrep Sn and nine USGS reference materials.

P–T Modelling Constrains the Depth of Emplacement of the Porto Azzurro Pluton and Implies Minor Exhumation Caused by the Zuccale Fault (Island of Elba, Italy)

open access: yesJournal of Metamorphic Geology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding the pressure of emplacement of granitic intrusions is crucial to understanding the exhumation history of plutons and constraining the tectonic setting of magma emplacement. However, P–T and geochronological constraints from exhumed plutons are often characterized by large uncertainties, especially in shallow crustal settings with
