Sedimentary Hydrodynamic Processes Under Low-Oxygen Conditions: Implications for Past, Present, and Future Oceans

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Continental margin sediments represent a major global sink of organic carbon (OC), and as such exert a key control on Earth’s climate. Today, OC burial in marine sediments mainly takes place under oxygen-rich water columns, where most OC is stabilized ...

Methodological approaches to determining the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The marine radiocarbon reservoir effect is an offset in 14C age between contemporaneous organisms from the terrestrial environment and organisms that derive their carbon from the marine environment.

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Processes and Microorganisms Involved in the Marine Nitrogen Cycle: Knowledge and Gaps

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Nitrogen (N) is a key element for life in the oceans. It controls primary productivity in many parts of the global ocean, consequently playing a crucial role in the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Augmentation of global marine sedimentary carbon storage in the age of plastic

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2021
Plastic is entering the world's oceans at an unprecedented rate impacting the functioning of the natural marine environment. Yet little consideration has been given to the potential of carbon (C) in the form of plastic (Cplas) to augment the marine ...

Sustainable and Multifunctional Natural Macromolecular Polymers for Aqueous Zn Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We comprehensively review the structure‐function relationships and regulatory mechanism of natural macromolecular polymers in stabilizing zinc anodes at the microscopic and mesoscopic scales. The interactions among polymer structures, optimization strategies, and regulatory mechanisms are discussed systematically summarizing recent related research ...

Breaking the Surface: Buoyant Metal–Polymer Open–Cell Hybrid Lattice Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Open‐cell metal–polymer lattice metamaterials that defy sinking. (a) Injection process of the polyurethane (PU) foam into the titanium (Ti‐6Al‐4V) hollow‐strut lattice creating the open‐cell Ti‐6Al‐4V+PU hybrid lattice, (b) flotation test of a hybrid lattice specimen, and (c) a digital representation and experimental validation of a marine buoy ...

Icehouse–greenhouse variations in marine denitrification [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2014
Long-term secular variation in the isotopic composition of seawater fixed nitrogen (N) is poorly known. Here, we document variation in the N-isotopic composition of marine sediments (δ15Nsed) since 660 Ma (million years ago) in order to understand major ...

Recovering the true size of an Eocene hyperthermal from the marine sedimentary record [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Hyperthermals - episodes of abrupt global warming associated with the massive injection of carbon into the oceans and atmosphere - represent possible analogs for future climate change. However, uncertainties in their magnitude, rate, and duration arising
