Differentiation of the Foliar Microbiomes From Co‐Occurring Grass Species Reflects Their Recency of Invasion

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This study examined the foliar fungal and bacterial microbiomes of two co‐occurring invasive grasses, recently introduced Oplismenus undulatifolius and long‐established Microstegium vimineum. Oplismenus communities exhibited lower diversity within samples and greater turnover between samples.

Shifts in Southeastern Bat Communities Driven by Landscape Composition Rather Than Ecological Release

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Using 25 years of capture data from Fort Campbell Military Installation, we evaluated whether white‐nose syndrome (WNS)‐driven declines in susceptible bats were followed by increases in non‐susceptible species (ecological release) versus shifts driven by land use change, at the installation and site specific spatial scales.

A Comparison between Passive airDNA Collection and Extraction Methods on the Recovered Terrestrial Vertebrate Assemblage

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Filtering airDNA, as with other biomonitoring tools, requires rigorous methodological testing before widespread implementation. Here, we assess the comparative performance of three collection matrices: medical gauze, paraffin gauze and PCR plate seals, alongside four readily available extraction kits: Qiagen DNeasy Blood & Tissue, Qiagen PowerSoil Pro,

Effects of Long‐Term Thinning on Soil Nematode Communities in Pinus taiwanensis Plantations

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Moderate thinning (20% tree removal) optimizes soil resource distribution and boosts soil nematode community diversity and stability in Pinus taiwanensis plantations. Fungivorous and omnivorous‐predatory nematodes are enriched under moderate thinning, indicating trophic cascading effects in soil food webs. Moderate thinning drives nematode life‐history

Drought and Nitrogen Addition Modulate Wolf Spider‐Associated Responses in a Detrital Food Web Without Detectable Functional Cascades

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Predators are important regulators of grassland biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, but their top‐down effects on detrital food webs under global change remain poorly understood. Using a field mesocosm experiment in a temperate grassland, we show that drought and nitrogen addition independently altered the effects of wolf spiders on soil fauna and ...

Getting by With a Little Help From Fungal Friends: Seed‐Associated Endophytes Contribute to Seed Defense Against Fungal Pathogens in Keystone Tropical Trees

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This study explored microbially mediated seed defense in fig (Ficus) species through inoculation experiments. We show that priority effects from endophytic fungi contribute to increased seed survival in the presence of fungal pathogens. ABSTRACT Soil‐borne fungal pathogens are known to be major causes of seed mortality in tropical forests; however, not

Desiccation to DNA: Bulk DNA Metabarcoding of Macroinvertebrate Egg Banks via Sugar‐Flotation Enhances Biodiversity Surveys of Dry Salt Lakes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Ephemeral salt lakes in arid Australia contain hidden macroinvertebrate biodiversity in sediment egg banks, but traditional artificial rehydration surveys may miss taxa with specific or poorly understood hatching requirements. This study found that sugar‐flotation followed by DNA metabarcoding greatly improved detection of resting‐stage taxa compared ...
