The toxins of marine microalgae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Exotoxins exert direct deleterious effects on flora and fauna: Some of them damage the cellular membrane, others have inhibiting effects on phytoplanktonic populations susceptible to coming into competition. In terms of pollution, exotoxins are especially a significant menace for aquaculture and although some are also bothersome for Man, we will not ...

Fluorescent Colored Passive Radiative Cooling Based on Carbon Dots for Cooling Power Recovery

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
We demonstrate colored passive radiative coolers consisting of a highly reflective porous ceramic base covered by an eco‐friendly luminescent carbon dot‐polymer composite, with two types of carbon dots enabling conversion of either ultraviolet or visible light, respectively.

Carbon‐Negative Upcycling of Sewage Sludge into Superiorly Stable Gel Via Liquid‐Phase Utilization Strategy for Water‐Remediation

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This work developed a low‐temperature sludge hydrothermal coupled with gel crosslinking strategy which could upgrade the waste liquid generated from sewage sludge hydrothermal treatment into the hydrothermal‐liquid‐gel. The inventive hydrothermal‐liquid‐gel exhibited the enhanced pollutant removal capability, high synthetic stability, and superior ...

Phase‐Change‐Activated Slippery Organogel Composite for All‐in‐One Anti‐Corrosion, Antifouling, and Self‐Cleaning

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A super‐slippery liquid‐infused composite organogel is engineered by localized interfacial grafting between hydrogel and oleogel networks, endowing the coating with a durable, multifunctional marine‐protective interface. Dynamic antifouling surfaces have emerged as a promising alternative, offering the potential for eco‐friendly and high‐performance ...

Sprayable Polyolefin Sorbents Enabled by Bio‐Solvents for Large‐Scale Oil and Chemical Spill Recovery

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A sprayable POE‐based sorbent formulated with a green solvent blend of α‐pinene, D‐limonene, and p‐cymene enables rapid in situ film formation via solvent evaporation, allowing efficient pollutant capture. The system exhibits high oil uptake (37.3 g g−1) and effectively removes up to 60 mL of VLSFO under simulated marine spill conditions.

From Policy Presence to Policy Performance: Adaptive Improvisation and the Everyday Politics of Plastic Burning Bans in Rural Indonesia

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Open burning plastics is a major environmental health hazard in low‐ and middle‐income countries, releasing toxic pollutants and exacerbating climate change. Although Indonesia prohibits plastic burning, enforcement in rural settings remains fragile.

Some marine toxins

open access: yes, 1995
The article presents some toxins of marine origin. These are tetrodotoxin from pufferfish, saxitoxins from red microalgae that mussels and shellfish ingest, and palitoxin the most toxic marine product isolated from zoonthurian Palythoa toxica.

Multi‐Objective RSM Optimization of Emission and Performance Characteristics in a Diesel Engine Fueled With BaTiO3 Nano‐Enhanced Jojoba Biodiesel

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This study uses response surface methodology to optimize Jojoba biodiesel blended with BaTiO3 nanoparticles in a single‐cylinder diesel engine. Results show that ~48.95–51.31 ppm of BaTiO3 achieves balanced performance and emission, decreasing CO and NOx while increasing torque and brake thermal efficiency.

Development of a Zebrafish Embryo‐Based Test System for Thyroid Hormone System Disruption: 3Rs in Ecotoxicological Research

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, EarlyView.
Abstract There is increasing concern regarding pollutants disrupting the vertebrate thyroid hormone (TH) system, which is crucial for development. Thus, identification of TH system–disrupting chemicals (THSDCs) is an important requirement in the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD) testing framework.
