Improving Maize Grain Yield under Drought Stress and Non-stress Environments in Sub-Saharan Africa using Marker-Assisted Recurrent Selection

open access: yes, 2016
In marker-assisted recurrent selection (MARS), a subset of molecular markers significantly associated with target traits of interest are used to predict the breeding value of individual plants, followed by rapid recombination and selfing.

From lactation to malignancy: A comparison between healthy and cancerous breast gland at single‐cell resolution reveals new issues for tumorigenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing reveals an opposite role of SLPI in basal tumors based on metastatic spread, along with shared activation of specific regulons in cancer cells and mature luminal lactocytes, as well as downregulation of MALAT1 and NEAT1 in the latter.

Evaluation of sorghum grain quality for QTL analysis and Marker Assisted Recurrent Selection (MARS) : [P1121] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Sorghum breeding in Mali mostly focuses on varieties for human consumption. Even if most of breeding efforts concentrate on productivity and adaptation, grain quality is a very important aspect to consider for improved material to be adopted and ...

Imeglimin attenuates liver fibrosis by inhibiting vesicular ATP release from hepatic stellate cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Imeglimin, at clinically relevant concentrations, inhibits vesicular ATP accumulation and release from hepatic stellate cells, thereby attenuating purinergic signaling and reducing fibrogenic activation. This mechanism reveals a newly identified antifibrotic action of imeglimin beyond glycemic control.

Marker assisted backcross breeding of Bg 358 (Oryza sativa L.) for the anaerobic germination tolerant QTL AG1

open access: yesTropical Agricultural Research, 2016
Sustainability of transplanting systems for rice crop establishment in Sri Lanka is threatened due to climatic changes and heavy rains. Tolerance to anaerobic germination (AG) stress is a key trait that will ensure good crop establishment in direct ...

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Molecular Markers and Marker-Assisted Selection in Crop Plants

open access: yes, 2017
Molecular markers have revolutionized the plant biotechnology and genetic studies because of their versatility. These markers include biochemical constituents like secondary metabolites and macromolecules, viz., proteins and deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA).

A large‐scale retrospective study in metastatic breast cancer patients using circulating tumour DNA and machine learning to predict treatment outcome and progression‐free survival

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
There is an unmet need in metastatic breast cancer patients to monitor therapy response in real time. In this study, we show how a noninvasive and affordable strategy based on sequencing of plasma samples with longitudinal tracking of tumour fraction paired with a statistical model provides valuable information on treatment response in advance of the ...

A method for genotyping elite breeding stocks of leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) by assaying mapped microsatellite marker loci [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus subsp. intybus var. foliosum L.) is a diploid plant species (2n = 18) of the Asteraceae family. The term "chicory" specifies at least two types of cultivated plants: a leafy vegetable, which is highly ...

Searching for an Accurate Marker-Based Prediction of an Individual Quantitative Trait in Molecular Plant Breeding

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2017
Molecular plant breeding with the aid of molecular markers has played an important role in modern plant breeding over the last two decades. Many marker-based predictions for quantitative traits have been made to enhance parental selection, but the trait ...
