Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS): Untapped Potential for Enhancing Food and Nutrition Securities in Sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yes, 2022
Global food security has raised concerns for the rapidly growing population and extreme weather due to climate change. Conventional plant breeding deployed the current greatly fecund crops, but there must be an increase in the genetic improvement to meet the anticipated future demand.

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of single circulating tumor cells in the follow‐up of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single circulating tumor cells (sCTCs) from high‐grade serous ovarian cancer patients were enriched, imaged, and genomically profiled using WGA and NGS at different time points during treatment. sCTCs revealed enrichment of alterations in Chromosomes 2, 7, and 12 as well as persistent or emerging oncogenic CNAs, supporting sCTC identity.

A method for genotyping elite breeding stocks of leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) by assaying mapped microsatellite marker loci [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus subsp. intybus var. foliosum L.) is a diploid plant species (2n = 18) of the Asteraceae family. The term "chicory" specifies at least two types of cultivated plants: a leafy vegetable, which is highly ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

A novel 22-bp InDel within FGF7 gene is significantly associated with growth traits in goat

open access: yesAnimal Biotechnology
Fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7) is involved in lipid metabolism, which is considered as a candidate gene with close relation with muscle development by eGWAs and RNA-Seq analyses. To date, limited research has been conducted on the relationship between

Identification of a new molecular marker C2-25 linked to the Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici resistance Frl gene in tomato

open access: yesCzech Journal of Genetics and Plant Breeding, 2014
Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. f.sp. radicis-lycopersici Jarvis & Schoemaker (FORL) is a saprophytic fungus, responsible for the fusarium crown and root rot disease in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Future trends in Animal Breeding due to new genetic tecnologies

open access: yes, 2011
The Darwin theory of evolution by natural selection is based on three principles: (a) variation; (b) inheritance; and (c) natural selection. Here, I take these principles as an excuse to review some topics related to the future research prospects in ...

Multiple QTL for horticultural traits and quantitative resistance to Phytophthora infestans linked on Solanum habrochaites chromosome 11. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Previously, a Phytophthora infestans resistance QTL from Solanum habrochaites chromosome 11 was introgressed into cultivated tomato (S. lycopersicum). Fine mapping of this resistance QTL using near-isogenic lines (NILs) revealed some co-located QTL with ...

Efficiency of Marker Assisted Selection(MAS) over The Phenotypic Selection for Economic Traits in Economic Animals

open access: yesJournal of Animal Science and Technology, 2002
The efficiency of marker assisted selection(MAS) over conventional selection index based sorely on phenotypic records was studied by deterministic simulation model. Parameter combination of heritability and amount of genetic variation due to the markers included in the index was employed. For the index with own phenotypic information vs. the index with

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.
