Microstructure and cleavage in lath martensitic steels [PDF]

open access: yesScience and Technology of Advanced Materials, 2013
In this paper we discuss the microstructure of lath martensitic steels and the mechanisms by which it controls cleavage fracture. The specific experimental example is a 9Ni (9 wt% Ni) steel annealed to have a large prior austenite grain size, then examined and tested in the as-quenched condition to produce a relatively coarse lath martensite.

Exploring the effect of complex hierarchic microstructure of quenched and partitioned martensitic stainless steels on their high cycle fatigue behaviour

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2023
Recent studies have demonstrated the viability of quenching and partitioning (Q&P) treatment for processing martensitic stainless steels showing an improved balance of high strength and sufficient ductility.

Air-Hardening Die-Forged Con-Rods—Achievable Mechanical Properties of Bainitic and Martensitic Concepts

open access: yesMetals, 2022
Three air-hardening forging steels are presented, concerning their microstructure and their mechanical properties. The materials have been produced industrially and achieve either bainitic or martensitic microstructures by air-cooling directly from the ...

Some remarks on particle size effects on the abrasion of a range of Fe based alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The low-stress three body abrasion behaviour of a range of steels was investigated. The tests were carried out in a rubber wheel tester (according to ASTM G65-94, reapproved in 2000) at room temperature.

In situ observation of strain and phase transformation in plastically deformed 301 austenitic stainless steel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
To inform the design of superior transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, it is important to understand what happens at the microstructural length scales.

Aluminum-alloyed lightweight stainless steels strengthened by B2-(Ni,Fe)Al precipitates

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2021
The age hardenability of Al-alloyed lightweight stainless steels with the base chemical composition Fe–10.5Cr–3Al (wt.%) and Ni concentrations in the range 3–15 wt.% was studied.

Study of Stainless Steel Resistance in Conditions of Tribocorrosion Wear [PDF]

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems, 2015
Analyzed was the influence of tribocorrosion wear due to effects of fatty acids present in the processed medium. The analysis was conducted on samples made of two austenitic and two martensitic stainless steels.

Physical metallurgy of modern creep-resistant steel for steam power plants: microstructure and phase transformations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The fact that the microstructure of steel depends on its composition and the heat treatment given to it has been heavily exploited in the design of steel for power plant applications.
