Spectral Matting

2007 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2007
We present spectral matting: a new approach to natural image matting that automatically computes a basis set of fuzzy matting components from the smallest eigenvectors of a suitably defined Laplacian matrix. Thus, our approach extends spectral segmentation techniques, whose goal is to extract hard segments, to the extraction of soft matting components.

Diazotrophic Microbial Mats

2010
Microbial mats have been the focus of scientific research for a few decades. These small-scale ecosystems are examples of versatile benthic communities of microorganisms, usually dominated by phototrophic bacteria (e.g., Krumbein et al., 1977; Jørgensen et al., 1983). They develop as vertically stratified populations of functionally different groups of

Matting of Scalp Hair

Dermatology, 1996
Matting of the hair is a rare condition characterized by an irreversible tangling of scalp hair. This phenomenon has an uncertain etiopathogenesis, and it is assumed that physical, chemical and electrostatic factors may lead to its onset. In our case, vigorous brushing of the hair can be suggested as the etiological factor of matting.
