A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Stereotactically navigated percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) compared to conventional MWA: a matched pair analysis

open access: yes, 2018
PurposeTo compare CT-navigated stereotactic microwave ablation (SMWA) to non-navigated conventional MWA (CMWA) for percutaneous ablation of liver malignancies.MethodsA matched pair analysis of 36 patients who underwent MWA of primary or secondary liver ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

HoLEP provides a higher prostate cancer detection rate compared to bipolar TURP: a matched-pair analysis

open access: yes, 2018
PurposeHolmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) has become a popular alternative to TURP for desobstructive prostate surgery. The prevalence of incidental prostate cancer (iPCa) during surgery varies depending on many preoperative factors.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

A multicentre matched-pair analysis comparing robot-assisted versus open partial nephrectomy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
To compare the perioperative, pathological and functional outcomes in two contemporary, large series of patients in different institutions and who underwent open partial nephrectomy (OPN) or robot-assisted PN (RAPN) for suspected renal tumours. This was a

Geographic pair matching in large-scale cluster randomized trials

open access: yesNature Communications
Cluster randomized trials are often used to study large-scale public health interventions. In large trials, even small improvements in statistical efficiency can have profound impacts on the required sample size and cost.
