Stochastic flow rule for granular materials [PDF]
There have been many attempts to derive continuum models for dense granular flow, but a general theory is still lacking. Here, we start with Mohr-Coulomb plasticity for quasi-2D granular materials to calculate (average) stresses and slip planes, but we propose a "stochastic flow rule" (SFR) to replace the principle of coaxiality in classical plasticity.

Consequential life cycle assessment of demolition waste management in Germany
ContextBulk mineral waste materials such as construction and demolition waste are Germany’s largest waste stream. Despite the availability of high-quality recycling pathways such as road base layers, waste concrete is predominantly recycled into lower ...

Electromagnetic induction in non-uniform domains
Kinematic simulations of the induction equation are carried out for different setups suitable for the von-K\'arm\'an-Sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment. Material properties of the flow driving impellers are considered by means of high conducting and high ...

Network-Induced Oscillatory Behavior in Material Flow Networks
Network theory is rapidly changing our understanding of complex systems, but the relevance of topological features for the dynamic behavior of metabolic networks, food webs, production systems, information networks, or cascade failures of power grids ...

Crystal Growth in Fluid Flow: Nonlinear Response Effects
We investigate crystal-growth kinetics in the presence of strong shear flow in the liquid, using molecular-dynamics simulations of a binary-alloy model. Close to the equilibrium melting point, shear flow always suppresses the growth of the crystal-liquid

High speed imaging of traveling waves in a granular material during silo discharge
We report experimental observations of sound waves in a granular material during resonant silo discharge called silo music. The grain motion was tracked by high speed imaging while the resonance of the silo was detected by accelerometers and acoustic ...
