Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Comparative analysis of price-maker bidding strategies in electricity markets in the context of rising share of new technologies

open access: yesEnergy Strategy Reviews
The expansion of renewable generation, demand response and transmission capacities between electricity markets in different countries and regions change electricity markets by increasing heterogeneity in the cost structure of generation and demand.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Consequential life cycle assessment of demolition waste management in Germany

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainability
ContextBulk mineral waste materials such as construction and demolition waste are Germany’s largest waste stream. Despite the availability of high-quality recycling pathways such as road base layers, waste concrete is predominantly recycled into lower ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Simulation in material flow design [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The objective of this paper is to discuss the role of discrete event system simulation in designing manufacturing layouts based on material flows. It is proposed that simulation should be used continuously during a layout project rather than just applying it as a one-shot analysis tool.

Flow of Viscous Materials [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1880
MR. BOTTOMLEY, in his paper on this subject in NATURE vol. xxi. p. 159, refers to experiments made four years ago, but if he refers to the Philosophical Magazine, vol. xxvi. 206, 1845, he will find a notice of an experiment made twenty-four year ago.
