Amorphous Order & Non-linear Susceptibilities in Glassy Materials

open access: yes, 2021
We review 15 years of theoretical and experimental work on the non-linear response of glassy systems. We argue that an anomalous growth of the peak value of non-linear susceptibilities is a signature of growing "amorphous order" in the system, with spin-glasses as a case in point.

Charged Pion Energy Reconstruction in the ATLAS Barrel Calorimeter [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The intrinsic performance of the ATLAS barrel and extended barrel calorimeters for the measurement of charged pions is presented. Pion energy scans (E = 20, 50, 200, 400 and 1000 GeV) at two pseudo-rapidity points ($\eta$ = 0.3 and 1.3) and ...

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Analysis of eigenvalues for problem on the transverse shear crack in material with power defining law

open access: yesVestnik Samarskogo Gosudarstvennogo Tehničeskogo Universiteta. Seriâ: Fiziko-Matematičeskie Nauki, 2007
We research the non-linear eigenvalues problem which appears from the problem of determining the stress-strain state near the transverse shear crack tip in material with power relationship between strains and stresses.

Nonlinear analysis of reinforced and composite columns in fire [PDF]

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2017
The paper describes a customer project, the objective of which was to develop a software program for the calculation of reinforced concrete and steel/concrete composite columns subjected to various loadings and exposed to normal temperature or to fire ...

Magnetoresistance in organic spintronic devices: the role of nonlinear effects

open access: yes, 2015
We derive kinetic equations describing injection and transport of spin polarized carriers in organic semiconductors with hopping conductivity via an impurity level.

Helmholtz bright and boundary solitons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We report, for the first time, exact analytical boundary solitons of a generalized cubic-quintic Non-Linear Helmholtz (NLH) equation. These solutions have a linked-plateau topology that is distinct from conventional dark soliton solutions; their ...

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

Non-linear modeling of active biohybrid materials [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 2013
Recent advances in engineered muscle tissue attached to a synthetic substrate motivates the development of appropriate constitutive and numerical models. Applications of active materials can be expanded by using robust, non-mammalian muscle cells, such as those of Manduca sexta.

A Layer Correlation Technique for Pion Energy Calibration at the 2004 ATLAS Combined Beam Test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed. It is based on a principal component analysis of the calorimeter layer energy deposits, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the ...
