Plane Partitions and a Problem of Josephus

open access: yesMathematics, 2023
The Josephus Problem is a mathematical counting-out problem with a grim description: given a group of n persons arranged in a circle under the edict that every kth person will be executed going around the circle until only one remains, find the position ...

On the Mathematics of Diffusion Models

open access: yesCoRR, 2023
This paper gives direct derivations of the differential equations and likelihood formulas of diffusion models assuming only knowledge of Gaussian distributions. A VAE analysis derives both forward and backward stochastic differential equations (SDEs) as well as non-variational integral expressions for likelihood formulas.

Mathematical models of viscous friction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this monograph we present a review of a number of recent results on the motion of a classical body immersed in an infinitely extended medium and subjected to the action of an external force.

Mathematical Modelling in Neuroendocrinology [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, 2008
In neuroendocrinology, mathematical modelling is about formalising our understanding of the behaviour of the complex biological systems with which we deal. Formulating our explanations mathematically ensures their logical consistency, and makes them open to structured analysis; it is a stringent test of their intellectual coherence.

Mathematical models of calcium and tight junctions in normal and reconstructed epidermis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This project investigated the calcium distributions of the skin, and the growth patterns of skin substitutes grown in the laboratory, using mathematical models. The research found that the calcium distribution in the upper layer of the skin is controlled
