DNA polymerase α (swi7) and the flap endonuclease fen1 (rad2) act together in the s-phase alkylation damage response in S. pombe [PDF]
Polymerase α is an essential enzyme mainly mediating Okazaki fragment synthesis during lagging strand replication. A specific point mutation in Schizosaccharomyces pombe polymerase α named swi7-1, abolishes imprinting required for mating-type switching ...

MATING TYPES IN OXYTRICHA AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MATING TYPE SYSTEMS IN CILIATES
A study of Oxytricha bifaria revealed a system of nine interbreeding mating types. The mating behavior and life cycle of this organism are described. Two hypotheses which account for systems of multiple mating types in some ciliates and binary mating types in others are presented.

Mating-type differentiation and mate selection in the homothallic Chlamydomonas monoica [PDF]
By using combinations of phenotypically-distinct--but sexually-compatible--mutant strains of C. monoica (zym-1, zym-27, and nit-2) and assaying for zygote genotypes in genetically-mixed mating populations (where gametes of the two parental homothallic strains were present at similar frequencies), we have found that matings occur preferentially between ...

Contrasted patterns in mating-type chromosomes in fungi: hotspots versus coldspots of recombination
It is striking that, while central to sexual reproduction, the genomic regions determining sex or mating-types are often characterized by suppressed recombination that leads to a decrease in the efficiency of selection, shelters genetic load, and ...

ABSTRACT Background Wilms tumor (WT) treatment imposes a significant time burden on patients and their families. Time toxicity is a patient‐centered metric that quantifies the burden of healthcare interaction. We sought to define time toxicity in the first year after diagnosis of WT and hypothesized that it would increase as tumor stage and treatment ...

Environment-induced same-sex mating in the yeast Candida albicans through the Hsf1-Hsp90 pathway.
While sexual reproduction is pervasive in eukaryotic cells, the strategies employed by fungal species to achieve and complete sexual cycles is highly diverse and complex.

Mating-type switching in S. pombe.
(A) The mat1 locus is expressed and confers cell type. The silent loci mat2-P and mat3-M serve as donors of genetic information to interconvert the mat1-P and mat1-M alleles.

The Heritability of Mating Behaviour in a Fly and Its Plasticity in Response to the Threat of Sperm Competition [PDF]
Phenotypic plasticity is a key mechanism by which animals can cope with rapidly changeable environments, but the evolutionary lability of such plasticity remains unclear.

ABSTRACT Background Pediatric sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that contribute disproportionately to cancer mortality in children. Although congenital anomalies are among the strongest known risk factors for childhood cancer, the risk of specific sarcoma subtypes among affected individuals has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. Procedure We
