The effect of habitat transformation on a twig epiphytic orchid: Evidence from population dynamics
The tropical Andean landscape has been dramatically transformed over the last century with remaining native forest limited to small fragments within a heterogeneous matrix of crops, cattle pastures, and urban environments.

The formal demography of kinship II: Multistate models, parity, and sibship
Background: Recent kinship models focus on the age structures of kin as a function of the age of the focal individual. However, variables in addition to age have important impacts.

Gribov's observation that global gauge fixing is impossible has led to suggestions that there may be a deep connection between gauge fixing and confinement. We find an unexpected relation between the topological nontriviality of the gauge bundle and colored states in SU (N) Yang–Mills theory, and show that such states are necessarily impure.

From biodiversity to health: Quantifying the impact of diverse ecosystems on human well‐being
Ample evidence suggests positive effects of species diversity on ecosystem functioning and services in natural and agricultural landscapes. Less obvious and even contested are the effects of such diversity on human well‐being.

On geometry and matrix models [PDF]
We point out two extensions of the relation between matrix models, topological strings and N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. First, we note that by considering double scaling limits of unitary matrix models one can obtain large N duals of the local Calabi-Yau geometries that engineer N=2 gauge theories.

Matrix Models as Solvable Glass Models [PDF]
We present a family of solvable models of interacting particles in high dimensionalities without quenched disorder. We show that the models have a glassy regime with aging effects. The interaction is controlled by a parameter $p$. For $p=2$ we obtain matrix models and for $p>2$ `tensor' models.
