Maximum Floor Accelerations in Buildings with Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls Subjected to Strong Earthquakes

open access: yesBuildings
As a result of recent seismic events, it has been observed that earthquake-resistant design worldwide has evolved to the point where structures are generally able to respond adequately to such natural demands.

Vibration response analysis of footbridge based on pedestrian perception

open access: yesAdvances in Bridge Engineering, 2023
This article aims to study the influence of random crowd loading on the perceived vibration response of pedestrians. Firstly, a vertical vibration response analysis method considering pedestrian perception was established based on the random crowd ...

Relativistic particle acceleration in developing Alfv\'{e}n turbulence

open access: yes, 2009
A new particle acceleration process in a developing Alfv\'{e}n turbulence in the course of successive parametric instabilities of a relativistic pair plasma is investigated by utilyzing one-dimensional electromagnetic full particle code.

Acceleration of maximum likelihood estimation for tomosynthesis mammography [PDF]

open access: yes12th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems - (ICPADS'06), 2006
Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is used during tomosynthesis mammography reconstruction. A single reconstruction involves the processing of high-resolution projection images, which is both compute-intensive and time-consuming. This workload is presently a bottleneck in the accurate diagnosis of breast cancer during screening. This paper presents our

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Optimal earthquake intensity measures for probabilistic seismic demand models of ARP1400 reactor containment building

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2021
This study identifies efficient earthquake intensity measures (IMs) for seismic performances and fragility evaluations of the reactor containment building (RCB) in the advanced power reactor 1400 (APR1400) nuclear power plant (NPP).

Influence of gas compression on flame acceleration in the early stage of burning in tubes

open access: yes, 2012
The mechanism of finger flame acceleration at the early stage of burning in tubes was studied experimentally by Clanet and Searby [Combust. Flame 105: 225 (1996)] for slow propane-air flames, and elucidated analytically and computationally by Bychkov et ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
