Investigating the effect of solid boundaries on the gas molecular mean-free-path

open access: yes, 2009
A key parameter for micro-gas-flows, the mean free path, is investigated in this paper. The mean free path is used in various models for predicting micro gas flows, both in the governing equations and their boundary conditions.

Removing Oxide Layers and Retaining Oxide‐Free Steel Surfaces by Polishing in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the efficacy of wet mechanical polishing under an oxygen‐free atmosphere for deoxidation and the retention of an oxide‐free steel surface are elucidated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methodology proved successful; however, the results were highly dependent on the preparation of the solvents used to clean the samples after ...

Insight Into the Wave Scattering Properties of the Solfatara Volcano, Campi Flegrei, Italy

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2019
Imaging methods able to discriminate type and content of fluids in volcanic areas and to track their migration with time are fundamental to get a picture of the volcanic structure and to constrain its shallow dynamics.

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.

Itararé Group Sandstone as a Sustainable Alternative Material for Photon Radiation Shielding

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The materials typically used for radiation shielding include lead, concrete, and polymers. However, some of these materials can be toxic or very expensive to produce.

Scaling of resistance and electron mean free path of single-walled carbon nanotubes

open access: yes, 2007
We present an experimental investigation on the scaling of resistance in individual single-walled carbon nanotube devices with channel lengths that vary 4 orders of magnitude on the same sample.

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...
