An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

EFFECT OF ALIGNMENT ON THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF POLYETHYLENE-GRAPHENE COMPOSITES AND COMPARISON WITH EFFECTIVE MEDIUM THEORY [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Polymers show low thermal conductivity (20 W/mK). Increased thermal conductivity of polymers can lead to useful applications in industry. The main objective of this research is to analyze the effect of alignment of polymer lamellae and graphene ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Comparison of Patellar Tracking Following Kinematic Alignment Versus Mechanical Alignment Total Knee Arthroplasty via the Mini‐Subvastus Approach

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery
Objectives Different alignment strategies (kinematic alignment [KA] versus mechanical alignment [MA]) during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) significantly influence postoperative patellar tracking.

Comparison of tibial alignment parameters based on clinically relevant anatomical landmarks a deep learning radiological analysis

open access: yesBone & Joint Open, 2022
AimsAccurate identification of the ankle joint centre is critical for estimating tibial coronal alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of the current study was to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to determine the accuracy and effect

Mechanical Alignment of Suprathermally Rotating Grains

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1995
It is shown that mechanical alignment of grains can be efficient for grains rotating suprathermally, i.e. with kinetic energy substantially exceeding $k$ (the Boltzmann constant) over any temperature in the system. The paper studies suprathermal rotation caused by H$_{2}$ formation and the alignment that takes place due to crossover events.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Can anatomic alignment measured from a knee radiograph substitute for mechanical alignment from full limb films?

open access: yes, 2009
Objectives: To examine whether categories of anatomic alignment (varus, neutral, valgus) measured from knee X-rays agree with similar categories of mechanical alignment from the full limb film and whether varus anatomic malalignment predicts medial joint

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
