Comparable outcomes with a potential functional advantage of PCL preservation in medial‐stabilized total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta‐analysis from the FP‐UCBM Knee Study Group

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose The management of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in medial‐stabilized (MS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains a topic of debate.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee Classification and Its Correlation with Post-operative Functional Outcomes in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Cohort Study

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Case Reports
Introduction: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is widely performed for end-stage osteoarthritis; however, 15–20% of patients continue to experience dissatisfaction despite successful surgery.

A prospective randomised control trial comparing functional with mechanical axis alignment in total knee arthroplasty: study protocol for an investigator initiated trial

open access: yesTrials, 2021
Background A drive to improve functional outcomes for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has led to alternative alignment being used. Functional alignment (FA) uses intraoperative soft tissue tension to determine the optimal position of ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

New Insights into the Mechanism for Chromosome Alignment in Metaphase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
During mitosis, duplicated sister chromatids are properly aligned at the metaphase plate of the mitotic spindle before being segregated into two daughter cells. This requires a complex process to ensure proper interactions between chromosomes and spindle microtubules. The kinetochore, the proteinaceous complex assembled at the centromere region on each

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

No difference in postoperative patient satisfaction rates between mechanical and kinematic alignment total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to compare patient satisfaction patient‐reported outcomes (PROMs) levels after mechanically aligned (MA) and kinematically aligned (KA) total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

A retrospective study of articular surface mounting computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty in alignment, knee function, and survival

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Rehabilitation, 2023
Background Hong Kong Chinese exhibits a greater varus lower limb mechanical axis and coronal bowing when compared to Caucasians. This anatomical difference may affect the accuracy of bone cuts in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using western anatomy-based ...
