The regulation of RANKL by mechanical force
Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 2020Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) is a key mediator of osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. Osteoblast-lineage cells including osteoblasts and osteocytes express RANKL, which is regulated by several different factors, including hormones, cytokines, and mechanical forces.

Mechanical forces and the 3D genome
Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 2023Traditionally, the field of genomics has been studied from a biochemical perspective. Besides chemical influences, cells are subject to a variety of mechanical signals from their surrounding tissue microenvironment. These mechanical signals can not only cause changes to a cell's physical structure but can also lead to alterations in their genomes and ...

Fibroblast responses to mechanical forces
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, 1998The repair and maintenance of connective tissues is performed predominately by a mesenchymal cell known as a fibroblast. The activity of this cell is regulated, in part, by changes in the mechanical environment in which it resides.

Mechanical Forces in Transformers
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1927In this paper a method of calculating the mechanical forces in transformers, based on mutual reactance between coils, is presented. A formula for the mutual inductance between coaxial solenoids is developed and from this expression the formula for the mechanical force between concentric cylindrical transformer coils is derived.

Gyroscopic forces for mechanical manipulators
2016 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM), 2016It has long been a challenge to control the end-effector trajectory of mechanical manipulators using only taskspace parameterization. While there exist some taskspace control strategies (such as the potential energy shaping) that guarantee the convergence of the end-effector to the target point without any inverse transformations, how to make the end ...

Mechanics of forced unfolding of proteins
Acta Biomaterialia, 2009We describe and solve a two-state kinetic model for the forced unfolding of proteins. The protein oligomer is modeled as a heterogeneous, freely jointed chain with two possible values of Kuhn length and contour length representing its folded and unfolded configurations.

Force analysis of the patellar mechanism
Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 1987AbstractThe aim of this study is an experimental evaluation of a force analysis of the patellar mechanism based on the assumption that patellofemoral contact is frictionless. At first, the geometric characteristics of contact surfaces, a prior knowledge of which is necessary for quantitative analysis, were measured from radiographs of 42 fresh‐frozen ...

Mechanisms of mechanical force aggravating periodontitis: A review
Oral Diseases, 2023Abstract Periodontitis is a widespread oral disease accompanied by uncontrolled inflammation‐related tissue destruction. Periodontitis is related to various factors. Among them, occlusal trauma can aggravate the severity of periodontitis and has been attracting a great deal of attention.

Gene Regulation by Mechanical Forces
Endothelium, 1997Endothelial cells are subjected to various mechanical forces in vivo from the flow of blood across the luminal surface of the blood vessel. The purpose of this review was to examine the data available on how these mechanical forces, in particular cyclic strain, affect the expression and regulation of endothelial cell function.
