Mechanical milling/alloying of intermetallics

Intermetallics, 1996
Abstract Recent research on the structure and properties of intermetallic compounds processed by ball milling—i.e. mechanical attrition—is reviewed. Mechanical attrition includes synthesis of intermetallics from the elemental powders of their constituents (mechanical alloying) and from milling the compound powder (mechanical milling) to provide ...

On the dynamics of mechanical milling in a vibratory mill

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1997
The dynamics of mechanical milling in a vibratory mill have been studied by means of mechanical vibration, shock measurements, computer simulation and microstructural evolution measurements. Two distinct modes of ball motion during milling, periodic and chaotic vibration, were observed.

Mechanical milling of MgB2

Physica C: Superconductivity, 2003
Abstract Changes in structure and magnetization of MgB 2 by mechanical milling have been examined by means of X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. Powder sample we used is commercially available and contains a small amount of MgO. Mechanical milling was done between 0 and 384 h.

Mechanical alloying and reactive milling in a high energy planetary mill

Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2008
Powder refinement in a planetary mill (Retsch PM 400-MA) is investigated experimentally and analyzed using discrete element modeling (DEM). Refinement is defined as the average size of the individual components in a composite powder. The specific milling dose, defined as the product of charge ratio and milling time, is used as an experimental parameter

Influence of milling media on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mechanically milled and sintered aluminium

Journal of Materials Science, 2005
Mechanically alloyed aluminium powder was prepared by vacuum attrition milling. Two types of milling balls (steel or hard-metal balls) were employed. Powder consolidation was carried out by cold pressing and vacuum sintering. The microstructure of consolidated samples obtained from powder milled with steel balls shows needle-shaped Al-Fe intermetallics.

A mathematical analysis of milling mechanics in a planetary ball mill

Materials Chemistry and Physics, 2001
A detailed mathematical analysis is presented to advance the current understanding of the mechanics of milling operation in a planetary ball mill in terms of a global Cartesian reference space. The ab initio calculations have identified the role of milling parameters in determining the condition of detachment of the ball from the vial wall.
