Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Technological Development of a Yarn Grip System for High-Speed Tensile Testing of High-Performance Fibers

open access: yesAUTEX Research Journal, 2019
Particularly in terms of carbon fiber (CF) rovings and further high performance fibers, it is a highly demanding task to clamp technical yarns with low elongations at break during high-speed tensile tests due to their sensitivity to shear stress.

Performance of Mechanical Air Classifiers

open access: yesChemical engineering, 1957
The authors proposed fundamental correlations among some variables having influences upon the design and operation of closed-circuit grinding1), and then a new index for expressing the performance of a classifier as the ratio of a specific surface of tailing to that which would be obtained if the ideal separation should occur.2)In this article, it is ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Radiation-pressure self-cooling of a micromirror in a cryogenic environment

open access: yes, 2008
We demonstrate radiation-pressure cavity-cooling of a mechanical mode of a micromirror starting from cryogenic temperatures. To achieve that, a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity (F\approx 2200) was actively stabilized inside a continuous-flow 4He cryostat.

Pulp fibre foams: Morphology and mechanical performance

open access: yesComposites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing
Cellulose (pulp) fibre foams serve as bio-based alternative to fossil-based cellular lightweight materials. The mechanical properties of cellulose fibre foams are inferior compared with traditional polymer foams and available information is often limited to compression properties.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Strain rate dependent material removal mechanism and surface morphology formation mechanism for high strength CFRTP

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Machining quality and efficiency are vital for the high-performance assembly of high strength CFRTP components. Strain rate sensitivity of thermoplastic matrix results in complex machining mechanism under the wide range of cutting speed.

Analysis of GaAs and Si solar energy hybrid systems [PDF]

open access: yes
Various silicon hybrid systems are modeled and compared with a gallium arsenide hybrid system. The hybrid systems modeled produce electric power and also thermal power which can be used for heating or air conditioning.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
