Mechanisms of the systemic inflammatory response

Perfusion, 1999
The purpose of inflammation is to combat various agents that may injure the tissues. Conditions such as CPB can often cause systemic inflammation and dysfunction of major organs. Pulmonary, renal, myocardial and intestinal function may suffer various degrees of impairment during and after cardiac surgery. Although changes in major organs usually remain

Fibroblast responses to mechanical forces

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, 1998
The repair and maintenance of connective tissues is performed predominately by a mesenchymal cell known as a fibroblast. The activity of this cell is regulated, in part, by changes in the mechanical environment in which it resides.

Mechanism of the human diving response

Integrative Physiological and Behavioral Science, 1994
The diving response in human beings is characterized by breath-holding, slowing of the heart rate (diving bradycardia), reduction of limb blood flow and a gradual rise in the mean arterial blood pressure. The bradycardia results from increased parasympathetic stimulus to the cardiac pacemaker. The reduction in limb blood flow is due to vasoconstriction
