From dry yarns to complex 3D woven fabrics: a unified simulation methodology for deformation mechanics of textiles in tension, shear and draping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Common methods of modelling the behaviour of fibrous materials, such as yarns and (woven) fabrics, is to treat them as continuous solids. The fibrous behaviour is then taken into account by appropriate constitutive laws.

Radon Daughter Plate-out onto Teflon

open access: yes, 2017
Radiopure materials for detector components in rare event searches may be contaminated after manufacturing with long-lived $^{210}$Pb produced by the decay of atmospheric radon. Charged radon daughters deposited on the surface or implanted in the bulk of

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Progressive failure methodologies for predicting residual strength and life of laminated composites [PDF]

open access: yes
Two progressive failure methodologies currently under development by the Mechanics of Materials Branch at NASA Langley Research Center are discussed. The damage tolerance/fail safety methodology developed by O'Brien is an engineering approach to ensuring

Inferring Pattern and Disorder in Close-Packed Structures from X-ray Diffraction Studies, Part I: epsilon-Machine Spectral Reconstruction Theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In a recent publication [D. P. Varn, G. S. Canright, and J. P. Crutchfield, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 66}:17, 156 (2002)] we introduced a new technique for discovering and describing planar disorder in close-packed structures (CPSs) directly from their ...

Multi‐omics and low‐input proteomics profiling reveals dynamic regulation driving pluripotency initiation in early mouse embryos

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mouse pre‐implantation development involves a transition from totipotency to pluripotency. Integrating transcriptomics, epigenetic profiling, low‐input proteomics and functional assays, we show that eight‐cell embryos retain residual totipotency features, whereas cytoskeletal remodeling regulated by the ubiquitin‐proteasome system drives progression ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

An ontology-based text mining dataset for extraction of process-structure-property entities

open access: yesScientific Data
While large language models learn sound statistical representations of the language and information therein, ontologies are symbolic knowledge representations that can complement the former ideally.

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

Galvanic corrosion behavior of AZ91D alloy / 45 steel couple under magnetic field

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys
Galvanic corrosion behavior of AZ91D alloy / 45 steel couple in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution under 0, 0.2 and 0.4 T magnetic field were studied by microstructure observation, immersion test and electrochemical measurement.
