Mechanics of filled cellular materials [PDF]

open access: yesMechanics of Materials, 2016
Abstract Many natural systems display a peculiar honeycomb structure at the microscale and numerous existing studies assume empty cells. In reality, and certainly for biological tissues, the internal volumes are instead filled with fluids, fibers or other bulk materials.

Quantifying the High-Temperature Separation Behavior of Lamellar Interfaces in γ-Titanium Aluminide Under Tensile Loading by Molecular Dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2021
γ-titanium aluminide (TiAl) alloys with fully lamellar microstructure possess excellent properties for high-temperature applications. Such fully lamellar microstructure has interfaces at different length scales. The separation behavior of the lamellae at

Experimental study and modeling on effective thermal conductivity of EPS lightweight concrete

open access: yesJournal of Thermal Science and Technology, 2016
The effect of expanded polystyrene (EPS) inclusions on thermal conductivity of lightweight concrete is studied. Various mixtures are produced by incorporating EPS aggregate at different volumes (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) in concrete with three water ...

The Role of Representations in an Inductive Deductive Inductive Approach in Engineering: Perspective from Mechanics of Materials [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, 2019
An inductive-deductive-inductive (I-D-I pedagogical approach, strengthened with physical model representation (PMR) was taken in a mechanics of materials course.

Influence of curing temperature on freeze-thaw resistance of limestone powder hydraulic concrete

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials, 2022
Limestone powder (LS) is a new environmentally-friendly concrete admixture, and its application in concrete engineering is worth exploring. The curing of LS hydraulic concrete under extreme temperatures will significantly affect the interior ...

Fabrication of an Ultra-Fine Grained Pure Titanium with High Strength and Good Ductility via ECAP plus Cold Rolling

open access: yesMetals, 2017
Microstructure evolutions and mechanical properties of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti, grade 2) during multi-pass rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) and cold rolling (CR) were systematically investigated in this work, to achieve ...

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

A method for rapid estimation of residual stresses in metal samples produced by additive manufacturing

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity
The mechanical methods for measuring residual stresses typically rely on so-called destructive techniques where some stress components can be determined based on part deflection after material removal (cutting, etching, drilling, etc.).

High temperature rise dominated cracking mechanisms in ultra-ductile and tough titanium alloy

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Specific titanium alloys combine transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity for improved work hardening. Here, the authors show that these alloys also have an ultra-large fracture resistance and an unexpected fracture mechanism via

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...
