Improving Strength and Ductility of a Mg-3.7Al-1.8Ca-0.4Mn Alloy with Refined and Dispersed Al2Ca Particles by Industrial-Scale ECAP Processing

open access: yesMetals, 2019
Tailoring the morphology and distribution of the Al2Ca second phase is important for improving mechanical properties of Al2Ca-containing Mg-Al-Ca based alloys.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Fabrication of an Ultra-Fine Grained Pure Titanium with High Strength and Good Ductility via ECAP plus Cold Rolling

open access: yesMetals, 2017
Microstructure evolutions and mechanical properties of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti, grade 2) during multi-pass rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) and cold rolling (CR) were systematically investigated in this work, to achieve ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Dealloying-based interpenetrating-phase nanocomposites matching the elastic behavior of human bone

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The long-term performance of orthopedic implants depends crucially on a close match between the mechanical behavior of bone and of the implant material. Yet, the present man-made materials with the required biocompatibility and strength are substantially

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

On the impact of capillarity for strength at the nanoscale

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Nanoscale crystals can experience lattice instability and a tension-compression asymmetry of their strength. Here, Mameka and colleagues scrutinize the proposition that these phenomena arise from surface-induced stress, finding that the surface tension ...

Formation and Corrosion Resistance of Micro-Arc Oxidation Coating on Equal-Channel Angular Pressed AZ91D Mg Alloy

open access: yesMetals, 2016
A commercial AZ91D Mg alloy, after bulk grain refinement by various passes of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), was selected for micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in silicate electrolyte, corrosion testing in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution and morphology analyses ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Adaptive plasticity of auxetic Kirigami hydrogel fabricated from anisotropic swelling of cellulose nanofiber film

open access: yesScience and Technology of Advanced Materials
Hydrogels are flexible materials that typically accommodate elongation with positive Poisson’s ratios. Auxetic property, i.e., the negative Poisson’s ratio, of elastic materials can be macroscopically implemented by the structural design of the continuum.
