Hydroxyurea: Mechanism of Action
Science, 1963Acetohydroxamic acid has been identified, by paper chromatography, in the blood of three patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia on hydroxyurea therapy. This suggests that the drug is hydrolyzed yielding hyroxylamine, which then cleaves thioesters, in particular acetyl-coenzyme A.

Mechanism of action of dipyridamole
Thrombosis Research, 1983Dipyridamole appears to act in vivo by synergistically modifying several biochemical pathways, including: a) inhibition of platelet cAMP-phosphodiesterase; b) potentiation of adenosine inhibition of platelet function by blocking reuptake by vascular and blood cells, and subsequent degradation of adenosine; and possibly, c) potentiation of PGI2 ...

The mechanism of action of probiotics
Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 2007Probiotics are a heterogeneous group of nonpathologic bacteria that are functionally defined by their ability to allay inflammation when introduced into the inflamed intestine. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent data bearing on the possible mechanisms of action of these bacteria, with a particular focus on the relation of these mechanisms ...

The mechanism of action of insulin
Ergebnisse der Physiologie Biologischen Chemie und Experimentellen Pharmakologie, 1955At the present time when the chemical exploration of the insulin molecule has yielded spectacular results (257–259) the physiology of its action is still a matter of speculation. Yet in this field, too, much new knowledge has been gained, mainly by the application of new techniques, such as the use of isotopes and in vitro studies with surviving ...

Mechanisms of antihormone action
The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1992The mechanisms of action of two types of anti-hormones is discussed. Type I anti-hormones comprise the antiestrogen hydroxy-tamoxifen and the antiprogestin RU486, both of which promote DNA binding of the cognate receptors and, due to the activity of one of the two transcription activation functions of the estrogen and progesterone receptors, act as ...

Mechanism of action of bisphosphonates
Current Osteoporosis Reports, 2003In recent years, substantial progress has been made in understanding the mechanism for bisphosphonate suppression of bone turnover. Bisphosphonates can now be distinguished based on their molecular and cellular mechanisms of action. Simple bisphosphonates such as clodronate and etidronate inhibit bone resorption through induction of osteoclast ...

Mechanisms of Action of Cryptenamine
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1968The hypotensive effect of cryptenamine has been reported to be markedly attenuated by adrenalectomy or by treatment with N,N-diisopropyl-N′-isoamyl-N′-diethyl-aminoethylurea (P-286) in atropinized animals. Cryptenamine also appeared to potentiate the response of isoproterenol on β-adrenergic receptors.

Thalidomide: Mechanisms of Action
International Reviews of Immunology, 2008The classification of thalidomide as an orphan drug with anti-inflammatory actions has led to its off-label use in conditions refractory to other medications. Although the observed clinical effects of thalidomide suggest it to have immunomodulatory capabilities, the mechanism of action is unclear.
