Mechanochemically Active Soft Robots
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2015The functions of soft robotics are intimately tied to their form-channels and voids defined by an elastomeric superstructure that reversibly stores and releases mechanical energy to change shape, grip objects, and achieve complex motions. Here, we demonstrate that covalent polymer mechanochemistry provides a viable mechanism to convert the same ...

Mechanochemical Activation of Anthracene [4+4] Cycloadducts
The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, 2023Controlled formation and breaking of weak chemical bonds is a versatile method for modifying the properties of materials. Anthracene [4+4] cycloadducts are a prime example that can be formed by light and opened by external forces. We address the theoretical description of mechanochemistry of these cycloadducts, where the standard constraint geometry ...

Mechanochemical Activation and Catalysis
2019Chemical transformations induced by mechanical force in solids are remarkable since they facilitate syntheses that are normally difficult to achieve in solution and thus allow the preparation of new molecules and materials or drastic improvements of the yields and selectivities.

Mechanochemical Activation of Bauxite
2012The crystallized layer that compounds the bauxite’s geological profile from NE Para was ore dressed through the processes of crushing, screening, washing and grinding, in order to reach the same size distribution of that in the alumina production industry. After the preparation process, the sample (90%, < 0.21 mm) containing 5.3% reactive silica and 47.

Shockwave Loading of Mechanochemically Active Polymer Coatings
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2014Thin films of mechanochemically active polymer were subjected to laser-generated, high amplitude acoustic pulses. Stress wave propagation through the film produced large amplitude stresses (>100 MPa) in short time frames (10-20 ns), leading to very high strain rates (ca. 1 × 10(7) to 1 × 10(8) s(-1)).

Structure–Mechanochemical Activity Relationships for Cyclobutane Mechanophores
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2011Ultrasound activation of mechanophores embedded in polymer backbones has been extensively studied of late as a method for realizing chemical reactions using force. To date, however, there have been few attempts at systematically investigating the effects of mechanophore structure upon rates of activation by an acoustic field.

Enhanced fluoride sorption by mechanochemically activated kaolinites
Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2008Kaolinite clay obtained from the mines was processed and studied for its fluoride sorption capacity. The surface area of the clay mineral was increased from 15.11 m(2)/g (raw) to 32.43 m(2)/g (activated) by mechanochemical activation. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to optimize various equilibrating conditions like the effect of contact time ...

Mechanochemical activation of calcium oxide powder
Powder Technology, 1996Abstract CaO formed by decomposing CaC03 at 1450 °C was ground in a vibrational mill. The variations of mechanochemical properties of the sample, such as surface area, crystal structure, surface free energy and reaction activity were studied. Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was ised in the analysis of surface free energy of the sample.

Mechanochemical Activation of Magnetite Nanoparticles
Journal of Nanoparticle Research, 2000Using Mossbauer spectroscopy as a function of ball milling time, it was found that nanomagnetite behaves differently than magnetite during mechanochemical activation. The phase sequence is determined by the original particle size of the powder.
