Serum Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Levels and Pituitary Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Content during Pseudopregnancy in the Rat*

Endocrinology, 1979
Pseudopregnancy (PSP) was induced in rats by vaginal stimulation and the levels of MSH in serum and pituitary were examined. One hour after vaginal stimulation, the serum MSH level was increased, and a cyclical variation was observed by the second day of PSP. There were two surges of about 50 pg/ml, one in the morning and the other at night.

Relationship of melanocyte-stimulating hormone to photoreceptor damage

Peptides, 1980
Three separate experiments involving intact, sham-operated and hypophysectomized albino rats, examined the relationship of alpha-MSH to the severity of photically-induced retinal damage. alpha-MSH was administered at 1430 hours and 0900 hours, when endogenous MSH levels are different, and continuously by osmotic minipumps.

α-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone

JAMA, 1991
"Black Skin or White? Science Offers a Choice" was the premature headline for an article written in 1980. 1 Even in 1991, science has not provided individuals with the ability to lighten, darken, or modify the hue of their skin. Tanning by exposure to sunlight or to artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation darkens skin but is considered dangerous ...

Some Questions Related to Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone

Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 1976
A number of questions remain unsettled about the release of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) and about its function. Even though relatively few investigators are studying this area, some generalities have emerged during the last 10 years. It now seems that release of MSH from the pituitary is inhibited by a substance present in the hypothalamus ...

THE ADIPOKINETIC ACTIVITIES OF THE CORTICOTROPHINS AND MELANOCYTE STIMULATING HORMONES

Acta Endocrinologica, 1960
ABSTRACT Pepsin degraded and non-degraded corticotrophin (ACTH) preparations all are highly adipokinetic and, in general, this parallels ACTH activity. a and β melanocyte stimulating hormones (MSH) are largely devoid of this activity. The structures necessary for fat mobilizing activity are similar but not identical to those for ACTH.

Hormone-Replacement Therapy for Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Deficiency

New England Journal of Medicine, 2016
The first law of endocrine disease treatment is that an absent hormone should be replaced. As they report in this issue of the Journal, Kuhnen et al.1 successfully applied this principle to two adult patients with genetic proopiomelanocortin deficiency, and both patients had impressive hunger reduction and weight loss as well as improved insulin ...
