We examined clinal gradients in reproductive modes and associated offspring body condition across a hybrid zone between two bimodal viviparous subspecies of Salamandra salamandra. We found a clear cline in reproductive modes, with pure modes at the extremes and mixed modes in central populations.

Vertebrates have a central clock and also several peripheral clocks. Light responses might result from the integration of light signals by these clocks. The dermal melanophores of Xenopus laevis have a photoreceptor molecule denominated melanopsin (OPN4x)

Melanophores, iridophores and xanthophores are pigment-cell types that interact to form the stripes in zebrafish. Here, the authors study the interaction between cells of the same kind and show that each pigment-cell type covers the skin by contact based

A vital dye analysis of the timing and pathways of avian trunk neural crest cell migration [PDF]
To permit a more detailed analysis of neural crest cell migratory pathways in the chick embryo, neural crest cells were labelled with a nondeleterious membrane intercalating vital dye, DiI.

Ichthyoplankton Adjacent to Live-Bottom Habitats in Onslow Bay, North Carolina [PDF]
The abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton adjacent to live-bottom habitats (rock outcroppings containing rich, sessile invertebrate communities and many species of tropical and subtropical fishes) in open-shelf waters « 55-m isobath) in Onslow ...

Heterotypic interactions regulate cell shape and density during color pattern formation in zebrafish
The conspicuous striped coloration of zebrafish is produced by cell-cell interactions among three different types of chromatophores: black melanophores, orange/yellow xanthophores and silvery/blue iridophores.
