The labial melanotic macule has an increased number of dendritic melanocytes along the basal layer. Numerous counterparts of the labial melanotic macule occur on the other mucosal and cutaneous surfaces. Most melanoacanthomas of the lip show a similar number of melanocytes along the junctional zone.

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the presence of large or multiple congenital melanocytic nevi in association with benign or malignant proliferation of melanocytes in the leptomeninges. NCM is believed to occur as a consequence of an error in morphogenesis in neural ectoderm in the developing embryo.

Riehl's Melanosis

In Riehl's melanosis, first observed in 1917, facial hyperpigmentation, most pronounced on the forehead and in the zygomatic and/or temporal regions is the dominant symptom. Riehl could find no explanation for the condition, but suggested that certain foods used during the war could be responsible.

Vulvar melanosis

Vulvar melanosis is a condition in which intensely pigmented irregular macules, clinically mimicking malignant melanoma, appear on the vulva. A biopsy specimen shows only marked lower epidermal pigmentation without any melanocytic atypia or nesting. The process is benign, and reassurance is the only treatment.
