Melatonin in Plants

2003
A widespread occurrence of melatonin in plant kingdom has been reported. The circadian rhythm in the level of melatonin observed in both unicellular algae and higher plants, suggests a role in regulation of photoperiodic and rhythmic phenomena, i.e. a similar function for melatonin in both plants and animals.

Melatonin and Aging

2002
Had there been a meeting on melatonin three decades after its discovery, and an assessment of its potential in 1988, perhaps many of the same topics would have been covered as are being addressed after four decades today. However, one feature about melatonin has clearly changed over the past 10 years.

Melatonin and Melatonin Receptors in Neuroprotection

2016
Melatonin (Mel) is a neurohormone which is synthesized from tryptophan with the activation of beta-adrenergic receptors of the pineal gland [2, 11, 36]. It is chemically known as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine [1]. The main task of this hormone is adjusting the rhythm of the body and protecting the biological clock of the body.

Melatonin

2007
Melatonin is a neurohormone that is secreted by the pineal gland and known to impact the sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin is regarded to be a safe and natural sleep aid. Since many people with tinnitus suffer sleep disturbance, melatonin has been studied as a therapeutic agent for tinnitus. A review of the literature suggests that melatonin has a beneficial

Melatonin and psychiatry

Biological Psychiatry, 1988
The pineal methoxyindole melatonin remains the most widely studied of the "pineal principles," and in subhuman species, the neuroendocrine status of this hormone is now generally acknowledged. In humans, however, no definitive functional activity for melatonin has yet been convincingly demonstrated, despite the description in recent years of marked ...

Alcohol and melatonin

Chronobiology International, 2021
Investigation of the pathogenesis of alcoholism in humans using different methodological approaches has facilitated detection of important biological factors of consequent metabolic diseases, endocrine disorders, and other medical conditions, such as alcoholic cardiomyopathy, alcoholic hypertension, heart and vascular lesions, alcoholic liver disease ...

Melatonin and the Thyroid

Hormone and Metabolic Research, 1980
Chronic melatonin administration (100 microgram daily for 21 days) to male weanling rats increased basal TSH without altering peripheral hormone levels. There was an increase in radioactive thyroidal iodine uptake in the melatonin treated animals. Melatonin increased the thyroid gland size relative to body weight and increased the total T4 content and ...

Photoimmunomodulation and melatonin

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, 2010
The seasons, and daily physical rhythms can have a profound effect on the physiology of the living organism, which includes immune status. The immune system can be influenced by a variety of signals and one of them is photic stimulus. Light may regulate the immunity through the neuroendocrine system leading to the most recent branch of research the ...

Melatonin in Humans

New England Journal of Medicine, 1997
Three centuries ago, the French philosopher Rene Descartes described the pineal gland as “the seat of the soul,” but it was not until the late 1950s that melatonin, the principal substance secreted by the pineal gland, was identified.1 There is now evidence that melatonin may have a role in the biologic regulation of circadian rhythms, sleep, mood, and
