Melatonin receptor structures shed new light on melatonin research

Journal of Pineal Research, 2019
AbstractThe tryptophan derivative melatonin is an evolutionary old molecule that is involved in a pleiotropy of physiological functions. In humans, age‐related decline of circulating melatonin levels and/or dysregulation of its circadian synthesis pattern have been associated with several disorders and disease states.

Melatonin Receptors and Melatonin Inhibition of Duck Salt Gland Secretion

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1999
Most of the NaCl ingested by marine birds is reabsorbed from renal filtrate and excreted by the cephalic salt glands as a hypertonic NaCl secretion (SGS). Ducks have salt glands and their kidney cells have melatonin receptors. Melatonin affects glomerular filtration rate and tubular uptake of sodium (Na(+)) in mammals.

[Melatonin receptor agonist].

Nihon rinsho. Japanese journal of clinical medicine, 2015
Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland and is involved in the regulation of human sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythms. The melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus play a pivotal role in the sleep-wake regulation.
