The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

Glacially overdeepened valleys in the northern Alpine Foreland preserve Middle to Late Pleistocene sedimentary sequences that may serve as valuable archives for reconstructing past environmental changes in response to shifts in climate. This study presents a multidisciplinary analysis of two sediment cores from the overdeepened Wehntal Valley at ...

Palynological records are central to the biostratigraphic subdivision of the Late Pleistocene in central Europe. Yet many interglacial and interstadial phases—such as the Eemian, Brörup and Odderade—remain only poorly constrained in time due to limited numerical dating.

A numerical model for meltwater channel evolution in glaciers
. Meltwater channels form an integral part of the hydrological system of a glacier. Better understanding of how meltwater channels develop and evolve is required to fully comprehend supraglacial and englacial meltwater drainage.

Sea ice decline in the Eastern Arctic results in expansion of the freshened surface layer
In this study, we report an anomalously large freshened surface layer in the Eastern Arctic during ice-free season in 2019. This freshened surface layer is formed by river discharge and sea ice meltwater and is also referred to as the Lena plume, due to ...

Palaeoglaciations in the Polar and Subpolar Ural Mountains
The Ural Mountains form a major physiographic boundary between the East European Plain and West Siberia, both repeatedly glaciated during the Pleistocene by the Barents–Kara ice sheet. Although the present‐day topography reflects significant glacial modification, the extent, chronology and interaction of mountain glaciers with the Barents–Kara ice ...

Antarctic ice-shelf meltwater outflows in satellite radar imagery: ground-truthing and basal channel observations [PDF]
Ice shelves regulate the flow of the Antarctic ice sheet toward the ocean and its contribution to sea-level rise. Accurately monitoring the basal and surface melting of ice shelves is therefore essential for predicting the ice sheet's response to ...

Numerous studies have shown that during the Quaternary there were substantial fluctuations in sea level in response to glacial–interglacial climate variability, reaching lowstand positions up to 134 m below the present sea level (b.s.l.). These fluctuations have had a strong influence on the morphology of shallow shelf seas, which preserve evidence of ...

The Palaeolithic site of Ochtmissen (Lower Saxony, Germany) was excavated in fluvial terrace deposits during the winter of 1993/1994. The current study presents, for the first time, a thorough analysis of the lithic assemblage, encompassing its primary technological and typological characteristics, as well as the type and age of the fluvial deposits ...
