Avoiding membrane locking with Regge interpolation [PDF]

open access: yesComputer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2021
In this paper we present a method to overcome membrane locking of thin shells. An interpolation operator into the so-called Regge finite element space is inserted in the membrane energy term to weaken the implicitly given kernel constraints.

Fourier analysis of membrane locking and unlocking

open access: yesComputer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2023
Despite four decades of research membrane locking remains an important issue hindering the development of effective beam and shell finite elements. In this article, we utilize Fourier analysis of the complete spectrum of natural vibrations and propose a ...

Evaluation of shear and membrane locking in refined hierarchical shell finite elements for laminated structures [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Modeling and Simulation in Engineering Sciences, 2019
Shear and membrane locking phenomena are fundamental issues of shell finite element models. A family of refined shell elements for laminated structures has been developed in the framework of Carrera Unified Formulation, including hierarchical elements ...

The discrete strain gap method and membrane locking

open access: yesComputer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2005
The discrete shear gap (DSG) method, initially proposed for the elimination of transverse shear locking in plate and shell finite elements, is extended to a more general concept, rephrasing ‘DSG’ as ‘discrete strain gap’.

Membrane locking in discrete shell theories [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This work is concerned with the study of thin structures in Computational Mechanics. This field is particularly interesting, since together with traditional finite elements methods (FEM), the last years have seen the development of a new approach, called

Extending CAS elements to remove shear and membrane locking from quadratic NURBS‐based discretizations of linear plane Timoshenko rods

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2023
Continuous-assumed-strain (CAS) elements were recently introduced (Casquero and Golestanian. Comput Methods Appl Mech Eng. 2022; 399:115354.) to remove the membrane locking present in quadratic C1$$ {C}^1 $$-continuous NURBS-based discretizations of ...

Strategy for Preventing Membrane Locking Through Reparametrization

open access: yes, 2022
The contribution takes up the concept of preventing locking a priori in the theory of thin-walled structures instead of curing it during discretization.

3D‐Zipped Interface: In Situ Covalent‐Locking for High Performance of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2021
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells can generate high power using a potentially green fuel (H2) and zero emissions of greenhouse gas (CO2). However, significant mass transport resistances in the interface region of the membrane electrode assemblies ...

Overcoming membrane locking in quadratic NURBS-based discretizations of linear Kirchhoff–Love shells: CAS elements

open access: yesComputer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2023
Quadratic NURBS-based discretizations of the Galerkin method suffer from membrane locking when applied to Kirchhoff-Love shell formulations. Membrane locking causes not only smaller displacements than expected, but also large-amplitude spurious oscillations of the membrane forces.
