Analysis of Membrane Locking in hp FEM for a Cylindrical Shell [PDF]
Summary: We analyze the performance of the \(hp\)-finite element method for a cylindrical shell problem. Our theoretical investigations show that the \(hp\) approximation converges exponentially, provided that boundary layers stemming from the edge effect are resolved.

Role of intracellular calcium cycling in sinoatrial node myocyte phase-locking
The phase-locking behavior of the sinoatrial node (SAN) may be related to heart rate modulation, which can be physically studied from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics.

The phase response of primary auditory afferents in a songbird (Sturnus vulgaris L.) [PDF]
The effects of stimulus frequency and intensity on phase-locking characteristics of cochlear ganglion cells were studied in the starling. All cells showed phase-locking to tone stimuli within their response area. Phase-locking at CF is found on average 9

A hierarchic optimisation approach towards locking-free shell finite elements [PDF]
A hierarchic optimisation approach is presented for relieving inaccuracies in conforming shell elements arising from locking phenomena. This approach introduces two sets of strain modes: (i) objective strain modes, defined in the physical coordinate ...

Comments on Membrane Locking [PDF]
AbstractMembrane locking is a severe issue frequently neglected in the context of low‐order (four node isoparametric) shell elements. From a theoretical point of view, the present contribution illustrates the underlying mechanism by means of shallow shell theory.

The resonance frequency shift, pattern formation, and dynamical network reorganization via sub-threshold input. [PDF]
We describe a novel mechanism that mediates the rapid and selective pattern formation of neuronal network activity in response to changing correlations of sub-threshold level input.

Hierarchic finite elements for thin plates and shells
We consider the numerical approximation of thin plate and shell structures. The plate model is described following the Reissner-Mindlin assumptions while the shell is described using the Naghdi formulation.

Membrane Environment Enables Ultrafast Isomerization of Amphiphilic Azobenzene
The non‐covalent affinity of photoresponsive molecules to biotargets represents an attractive tool for achieving effective cell photo‐stimulation. Here, an amphiphilic azobenzene that preferentially dwells within the plasma membrane is studied.

Numerical results on the locking for cylindrical shells
We investigate the performance of the Naghdi shell model using a family of hierarchic high order finite elements. We solve two cylindrical shell problems, representative of extremely discriminating situations: the membrane dominated Scordelis-Lo problem
