Novel drugs approved by the EMA, the FDA and the MHRA in 2025: A year in review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 9, Page 1779-1813, May 2026.
Abstract In the 2025 novel drug mini‐review, one can take a full measure of the ingenuity that underlies current drug design and development, despite the year's smaller harvest (46 novel drugs) compared to 2024 (53) and 2023 (70). 54% of the novel drugs are first‐in‐class (FIC).

Emerging Role of Ferroptosis in Diabetes and Associated Complications: When Metabolic Dysregulation Meets Cell Death

open access: yesCell Proliferation, Volume 59, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study identifies ferroptosis as a key driver of diabetes and its complications via iron metabolism and lipid peroxidation, elucidates organelle interactions underlying cell vulnerability, and provides insights for targeted therapies against metabolic disorders.

Baseline and 4‐year associations between prediabetes and kidney impairment: Insights from the ILERVAS cohort

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 5, Page 3777-3787, May 2026.
Abstract Aims Prediabetes is a prevalent condition associated with increased cardiovascular and renal risk. However, the long‐term impact of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) within the range defined as prediabetes on kidney function remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between prediabetes and renal function (estimated glomerular ...

Rapid improvement of renal microcirculatory homeostasis by liraglutide following diabetes induction

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 5, Page 4066-4081, May 2026.
Abstract Aims Renal microvascular dysfunction is a central driver of diabetic kidney disease, yet the potential for rapid therapeutic reversal remains obscure. We investigated the effect of short‐term liraglutide on early changes in the renal microcirculation post‐induction of diabetes.

Whole Blood Transcriptomic Analysis of Sickle Cell Trait

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Haematology, Volume 116, Issue 5, Page 535-544, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Sickle cell trait (SCT) is the heterozygous carrier state for the HBB missense variant which causes sickle cell disease (SCD). SCT has been associated with increased risk of venous thromboembolism and chronic kidney disease as well as alterations in clinical laboratory parameters. To investigate differential gene expression in SCT, we used RNA
