On the Uncertainty of Information Retrieval in Associative Memories

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2012
We (people) are memory machines. Our decision processes, emotions, and interactions with the world around us are based on and driven by associations to our memories. This natural association paradigm will become critical in future memory systems, namely, the key question will not be “How do I store more information?” but rather “Do I have the relevant ...

Dynamically Actuated Reconfigurable Topographical Surface Enables Active Control of Implant‐Associated Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dynamically actuated reconfigurable topographical surface (DARTS) integrates contact‐mediated bactericidal nanotopography with programmable mechanical actuation to actively disrupt bacterial biofilms. Dynamic surface reconfiguration enhances bacterial killing and suppresses implant‐associated infections in vivo, providing a new strategy for active ...

The role of left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex during episodic decisions : semantic elaboration or resolution of episodic interference? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Context memory retrieval tasks often implicate the left ventrolateral pFC (LVPFC) during functional imaging. Although this region has been linked to controlled semantic processing of materials, it may also play a more general role in selecting among ...

Subjective Experience of Episodic Memory and Metacognition: A Neurodevelopmental Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Episodic retrieval is characterized by the subjective experience of remembering. This experience enables the co-ordination of memory retrieval processes and can be acted on metacognitively.

Projection neurons from medial entorhinal cortex to basolateral amygdala are critical for the retrieval of morphine withdrawal memory

open access: yesiScience
Summary: The medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) is crucial for contextual memory, yet its role in context-induced retrieval of morphine withdrawal memory remains unclear. This study investigated the role of the MEC and its projection neurons from MEC layer 5

Noise‐Tunable Memristor Enabling Programmable Probabilistic Neurons for Frequency‐Selective Time‐Series Signal Encoding

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Memristors offer tunable resistance and intrinsic instability, making them promising tunable noise sources. We propose a spiking‐rate‐programmable probabilistic neuron using a Ru/TaOx/Pt memristor, where resistance‐dependent noise enables frequency‐selective encoding.
