Menorrhagia: an update

Menorrhagia is defined as a ‘complaint of heavy cyclical menstrual bleeding occurring over several consecutive cycles’. Objectively it is a total menstrual blood loss equal to or greater than 80 ml per menstruation. It is estimated that approximately 30% of women complain of menorrhagia.

Menorrhagia limits normal activities, and causes anaemia in two-thirds of women with objective menorrhagia (loss of 80 mL blood per cycle). Prostaglandin disorders may be associated with idiopathic menorrhagia, and with heavy bleeding due to fibroids, adenomyosis, or use of intrauterine devices (IUDs).
