No spatial-numerical mapping in cultures with mixed-reading habits
Reading habits are thought to play an important role in the emergence of cultural differences in visuo-spatial and numerical tasks. Left-to-right readers show a slight visuo-spatial bias to the left side of space and automatically associate small numbers

An integration of competing accounts on children’s number line estimation
Children’s estimation patterns in bounded number line estimation reveal marked developmental changes. Three different theoretical accounts were proposed to explain these changes: a log-to-linear shift account, a proportion-judgment account and a two ...

Spontaneous Mapping of Number and Space in Adults and Young Children [PDF]
Mature representations of space and number are connected to one another in ways suggestive of a ‘mental number line,’ but this mapping could either be a cultural construction or a reflection of a more fundamental link between the domains of number and ...

Psychoeducational interventions in adolescent depression: A systematic review [PDF]
Background: Adolescent depression is common and leads to distress and impairment for individuals/families. Treatment/prevention guidelines stress the need for good information and evidence-based psychosocial interventions.

There’s a SNARC in the Size Congruity Task
The size congruity effect involves interference between numerical magnitude and physical size of visually presented numbers: congruent numbers (either both small or both large in numerical magnitude and physical size) are responded to faster than ...

Behavioral, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging data support the idea that numbers are represented along a mental number line (MNL), an analogical, visuo-spatial representation of number magnitude.

The Developmental Emergence of the Mental Time-Line: Spatial and Numerical Distortion of Time Judgement [PDF]
International audienceThe perception of time is susceptible to distortion by factors such as attention, emotion, or even the physical properties of the stimulus to be timed. In adults, there is now evidence for a left-right spatial representation of time

Variability in the Alignment of Number and Space Across Languages and Tasks
While the domains of space and number appear to be linked in human brains and minds, their conceptualization still differs across languages and cultures.

We associate small numbers with the left and large numbers with the right side of space. Recent evidence from human newborns and non-human animals has challenged the primary role assigned to culture, in determining this spatial numerical association (SNA)
