Mental rotation and perceptual uprightness [PDF]

open access: yesPerception & Psychophysics, 1978
Performance in Cooper and Shepard’s (1973) mental rotation task was examined in the context of a model that defined the extent to which alphabet letters could be tilted from their normal orientation and still be perceptually upright. For letters with a broad range of orientations for which they remain perceptually upright, a nonlinear effect of ...

The effect of internal and external visualization of rotation on postural stability

open access: yesFrontiers in Cognition
IntroductionDuring mental rotation tasks, it is assumed that participants visualize a rotation of objects in their minds (internal visualization), but mental rotation has also been linked to the visible rotation of objects on a screen (external ...

Sex Differences in the Performance of 7–12 Year Olds on a Mental Rotation Task and the Relation With Arithmetic Performance

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2019
This study evaluates boy-girl differences in 3D mental rotation in schoolchildren aged 7–12 years and the relation to arithmetic performance. A dedicated new task was developed: The Mental Rotation Task – Children (MRT-C).

The role of rotational hand movements and general motor ability in children’s mental rotation performance

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
Mental rotation of visual images of body parts and abstract shapes can be influenced by simultaneous motor activity. Children in particular seem to have a strong coupling between motor and cognitive processes.

Strategy Selection Versus Flexibility: Using Eye-Trackers to Investigate Strategy Use During Mental Rotation

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Psychology. Learning, Memory and Cognition, 2019
Spatial researchers have been arguing over the optimum cognitive strategy for spatial problem-solving for several decades. The current article aims to shift this debate from strategy dichotomies to strategy flexibility—a cognitive process, which although

Early contributions to infants' mental rotation abilities.

open access: yesDevelopmental Science, 2018
Some cognitive abilities exhibit reliable gender differences, with females outperforming males in specific aspects of verbal ability, and males showing an advantage on certain spatial tasks. Among these cognitive gender differences, differences in mental

Reservoir‐Type Subcutaneous Implantable Devices Containing Porous Rate Controlling Membranes for Sustained Delivery of Risperidone

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel implantable drug delivery systemwith a biodegradable poly(caprolactone) membrane and compressed drug core forsustained release. These implantable devices deliver risperidone in vitro for 170 days and in vivo for 49 days in rats, showing promise for chronic conditions like schizophrenia.

Inorganic Dielectric Materials Coupling Micro‐/Nanoarchitectures for State‐of‐the‐Art Biomechanical‐to‐Electrical Energy Conversion Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Biomechanical‐to‐electrical energy conversion devices are uniquely suited for self‐driven physiological information monitoring and powering human–computer interaction systems. These devices based on micro‐/nanoarchitectured inorganic dielectric materials (MNIDMs) have shown ultrahigh electromechanical performance and thus great potential for practical ...

No role of working memory in the relation between mental rotation and postural stability

open access: yesFrontiers in Cognition
This study investigated the relationship between mental rotation ability and postural stability, with a focus on the role of the visuospatial sketchpad of working memory, as it has been found to be correlated with both concepts.
